Hiawatha Boys & Girls Sweep Big Seven Track Titles

It was a battle for the top teams in the Big Seven track action on Thursday and the Hiawatha Red Hawks made it a sweep taking home both the boys and girls track titles at Holton.

In the girls competition the Red Hawks edged out Sabetha by 11 points to claim first place with 132 points on the day, winning six events in the process of taking home the League title. Sabetha placed second as the only other team to go over 100 points on the day finishing with 121 points, 33 points better than third place, which went to Perry Lecompton. The rest of the team finishes were: 4th - Royal Valley, 5th - Nemaha Valley, 6th - Holton, 7th - ACCHS, 8th - Riverside, 9th - Jeff West and 10th - Santa Fe Trail.

On the boys side of competition the race for the League title was even tighter than the girls as Hiawatha won the League title by just seven point’s finishing with 108.50 points to beat out Royal Valley who took second with 101.50 points. Perry Lecompton boys just like the girls took home third place at the Big Seven meet. The rest of the team finishes were: 4th - Holton, 5th - Nemaha Valley, 6th - Riverside, 7th - Sabetha, 8th - Santa Fe Trail and 9th - Jeff West.

The League champion, Hiawatha Red Hawks led the charged on the day on their way to the titles posting 11 first place performances in the boys and girls competitions combined. On the girls side Jordan Puvogel led the charge for Hiawatha as she claimed first in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 5:22.82 and 12:29.52, while also teaming up with Kailey Davis, Molly Kettler and Courtney Brockhoff to win the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:59.12, breaking the school and league record. Both Davis and Kettler also were part of the 4x400 meter relay team for the Red Hawks that took home gold with a time of 4:17.15, as Brianna Schmitz and Emily Bauer joined Davis and Bauer on the team. Schmitz added to her day individually also as she took home first place in the 400 meter dash (1:02.06), while Emily Gartner tossed her way to the win in the discus (136'10) for the Red Hawks, also.

On the boys side of competition for Hiawatha Conner Bigham led the way notching wins in the 800 meter run (2:05.50) and the high jump (6'04.25), while also partnering up with Brandt Houk, Tyler Boeckman and Brendan Steele to win the 4x800 meter relay behind a time of 8:33.38. Steele added a gold medal in the long jump to his day behind a leap of 20'09.75, while Quentin Overdick tossed his way to the league discus title with a toss of 149'09.

Perry Lecompton took home six gold medals on the day with five coming in the boys competition and three by one guy in Colin Coleman who won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes posting times of 10.52, 21.60 and 50.62. Coleman's day didn't stop there as he was part of the Kaws 4x100 meter relay team that posted a time of 43.37 to win gold, as Seth Surface, Cody Williams and William Hinrichsen teamed up with Coleman. The trio of Surface, Williams and Hinrichsen then partnered with Cole Kellum to win the 4x400 meter relay also registering a time of 3:28.96 to earn the gold. The lone gold medal performance by the Kaws in the girl’s competition was posted by Lexia Jamison who won the 800 meter run (2:26.87).

Royal Valley Panthers had five first place performances on the day with four of them coming from one gal. Elizabeth Blevins finished off the day by winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.93 and 26.52, while also winning both the triple and long jumps behind leaps of 15'10.75 and 34'07, respectively. Skyler Link posted the other first place finish for the Panthers winning the boys triple jump league title with a leap of 41'11.50.

Both Nemaha Valley and Holton each took home four first place performances on the day at the Big Seven League meet.

The Raiders were led by Rachael Baumgartner who continued to register first place finishes this season winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 16.16 and 47.82, while vaulting her way to the win in the pole vault (9'00.75). Shaylyn Stallbaumer also registered a first place finish for Nemaha Valley winning the javelin behind a toss of 140'08.

Holton was led by the day by Brenden Hampton who swept the boys hurdles titles winning both the 110 and 300 meters notching times of 15.31 and 41.00 to earn the wins. Dalton Colhouer and Kyrstie Miller each posted a first place performance also for the Wildcats winning the 1600 meter run (4:44.09) and the shot put (34'11), respectively.

Sabetha Bluejays posted three gold medal showings as Keegan Cox won the 3200 meter run (10:26.68) and Meagan Garrett won the high jump (4'100). Garrett teamed up with Courtney Plattner, Kelli Stallbaumer and Nicole Brey to win the 4x100 meter relay for the Bluejays behind a time of 51.80.

Riverside, Jeff West and Santa Fe Trail each had one first place finisher on the day at the Big Seven League meet. Riverside Cyclone, Dillon Logston took home first place in the pole vault (12'06), while Jeff West Tiger, Michael Majors won the shot put (45'05) and Santa Fe Trail Charger, Tyler Mundy won the javelin (174'07).

The Big Seven teams now turn their attention to Regional track action next Friday, May 23rd.
