KS Class 4A Regional Track --- Five Area Schools Have State Qualifiers

Five area schools are sending athletes to Wichita in Class 4A competition as the five schools competed in two different Regionals.

Both Holton and Royal Valley competed at the Abilene Regional, while Atchison, Jeff West and Perry Lecompton competed at the Basehor-Linwood 4A Regional. The best team’s performances from the area came from Royal Valley boys who took second at the Abilene Regional and Perry Lecompton boys who took third. Ten individual Regional first place finishes were earned by area competitors.

Seven athletes form Royal Valley are headed to State next week with three competing in multiple events. Leading the charge for the Panthers is Elizabeth Blevins who qualified for State in four events as she took second and fourth in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, respectively, while leaping to a pair of third place finishes in the long jump and triple jump to qualify for State. Kathryn Hanson is the only other Lady Panther to qualify for State as she finished fourth in the javelin.

On the boy’s side of competition for Royal Valley, Chris Chapman leads the way as he won the Regional title in the high jump (5'10) and tied for third in the pole vault, to qualify for State. Skyler Link also earned State bids in two competitions by taking third in both the long jump and triple jump. Both Gary Stauffer and Donnie Lewis each tossed their way to Regional titles in the shot put (46'08.75) and discus (146'02), respectively, while Patrick Broxterman also qualified for State, after taking third in the high jump. While, Bryce Golightley was the only Panther to qualify on the track taking fourth in the 1600 meter run.

The Holton Wildcats are sending five athletes to the State competition after they posted top four finishes in events. Brendan Hampton speared headed the performances by the Wildcats winning the Regional titles in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 15.77 and 40.92, respectively. While Drake Ewing and Dalton Colhouer also each qualified for State on the track, after taking second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 1600 meter run, respectively; while in the field events, Indie Allen took third in the triple jump to earn a spot at State. Krystie Miller is the lone Lady Wildcat to head to State as she will compete in the discus and shot put, after winning the Regional title in the discus with a toss of 112'03 and taking third in the shot put.

Atchison Redman will have eight athletes competing at the State level in Class 4A. Sierra Smith will lead the Lady Red on the track as she will compete in the 100 and 200 meter dashes at State after taking second at Regionals in the 100 and winning the 200 with a time of 25.82. Smith also teamed up with Imogene Bratton, Akiela Gill and Mady Shipley for the 4x100 meter relay and the Lady Red finished second to qualify for State. Shipley on top of qualifying for State with the relay team also finished third in the pole vault to earn a spot at State. Sarah Jaloma recorded a second place finish in the 1600 meter run to grab a spot at State. On the boys side the trio of Jerel Rawls, Shane Johnston and Dane Anderson all qualified for State for Atchison. Rawls finished third in the 400 meter dash, while Johnston and Anderson both notched fourth place finishes in the 200 meter dash and shot put, respectively.

The Kaws finished Regionals with five Regional champs and a few other State qualifiers, too. Colin Coleman was a part of three of the five Regional title wins as he won the 100 and 200 meter dashes behind times of 11.02 and 22.03, respectively, while racing with Seth Surface, Cody Williams and William Hinrichsen to win the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:24.09. Surface added another first place finish to his day winning the Regional title in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.09. While, Austin Kurtz also qualified for State taking third in the javelin. In the girl’s competition, Emma Taylor claimed the 300 meter hurdles Regional title posting a time of 48.20, while Lexia Jamison earned a spot at State after her second place finish in the 800 meter run. The Lady Kaws 4x400 meter relay team of Jamison, Taylor, Kaylee Visser and Halsten Coyle qualified for State after taking third. Alicia Johnston and Abbigayle Folks finished fourth and second in the pole vault and triple jump, to earn spots at State.

For Jeff West the only Tiger that will compete at State is Janelle Debus who finished fourth at Regionals in the high jump.
