KS Class 3A Regional Track --- Ten Area Schools Have State Qualifiers

The Class 3A State Track competition will be jam packed with Northeast Kansas area athletes from the Northeast Kansas League, Big Seven and North Central Kansas League.

Sabetha played host to all but one area team for Class 3A Regional track action and multiple schools had multiple athletes earn spots at the State competition. The Hiawatha Red Hawk boys and girls continued their strong seasons both winning the Regional team titles. On the girls side Sabetha took second and Silver Lake third, while Silver Lake boys took second and the Riverside boys finished third in the boys competition. Marysville was the lone area school that competed in a different Regional, competing in the Phillipsburg Regional.

The Big Seven League really highlighted the Sabetha Regional action with Hiawatha, Sabetha, Nemaha Valley, Riverside and ACCHS earning multiple State qualifiers.

Hiawatha piled up the top performances including eight Regional titles on the day. Quentin Overdick claimed a pair of Regional titles tossing his way to wins in the discus and javelin with tosses of 163'09 and 153'03, respectively. Conner Bigham like Overdick also won a pair of events at Regionals winning the 800 meter run (2:03.38) and leaping to the high jump title (6'04). On the girls side Jordan Puvogel won two events individually taking home the 800 meter run (2:22.35) title and the 1600 meter run crown (5:22.56), while also finishing second in the 3200 meter run. Puvogel didn't stop three as she partnered with her fellow Red Hawks Courtney Brockhoff, Kailey Davis and Molly Kettler to post a time of 10:03.45 to win the 4x800 meter relay. Emily Gartner claimed the other Regional title as she tossed her way to the discus win with a toss of 140'07, while also qualifying for State in the shot put with a third place finish.

Plenty more Hiawatha athletes qualified for State in multiple other events, too. Davis, Brockhoff and Kettler all qualified in other events along with the 4x800 meter relay. Davis finished third and fourth in the 400 and 800 meters, respectively, while Kettler and Brockhoff both notched fourth place finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, respectively. Kettler and Davis also teamed up with Brianna Schmitz and Emily Bauer to place second in the 4x400 meter relay to qualify for State, while Schmitz also qualified in the 200 and 400 meter dashes and high jump after three second place finishes. For the boys both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams qualified for State after second place finishes as Bigham, Brendan Steele, Ryker Smith and Justin Sprick raced in the 4x400 and Brandt Houk teamed with Bigham, Steele and Smith in the 4x800. Houk added a third place showing in the 3200 meter run to qualify for State, while Tyler Boeckman qualified in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs after a fourth and second place finish, respectively. Gavin Lierz also qualified on the track for Hiawatha finishing third in the 300 meter hurdles. On the field Bryce Oldridge and Shawn Green are joining their throwing mate, Overdrick at State after notching second place in the shot put and fourth in the javelin, respectively.

Sabetha Bluejays will fly to Wichita with multitude of competitors set to compete at State Track. Bluejays had two first place performances on the day as the 4x800 meter relay team of Kellen Russel, Michael Baumgartner, Jacob Frey and Corbin Cox posted a time of 8:26.55 to win the gold and Regional title, and Meagan Garret leapt her way to the Regional high jump title with a leap of 5'02.

In the girls competition plenty of more State tickets were punched for Sabetha as eight girls had top four finishes in the field events. Heidi Heiniger, Emily Meyer and Mariah Huenke finished second, third and fourth in the javelin; while Rhianna Becker took second in the discus and Taylor Metzger fourth in the shot put qualifying for State. Courtney Plattner registered a second place finish in the long jump and Anna Sunderland placed fourth in the pole vault for the Bluejays, while Kelli Stallbaumer qualified in two events the long jump and the triple jump after a fourth and second place finish. The team of Alexis McAfee, Taryn Schuette, Emily Strathman and Miranda Huettner place fourth in the 4x800 meter relay to earn a State bid, while Huettner and McAfee raced with Olivia Bachtold and Jenna Winkler to finish third in the 4x400 meter relay. Nicole Brey earned two State bids on the track after taking second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meter dash.

For the Sabetha boys Keegan Cox snatched up to State bids by taking fourth in the 1600 meter run and second in the 3200 meter run, while Alex Edelman, Christian Reinprecht and Treavor Schmelzle all had top four showings in field events. Edelman took second in the long jump, while Reinprecht took third and Schmelzle finished third in the javelin.

Nemaha Valley Raiders were led at Regionals by four first place finishes. Rachael Baumgartner paced the way winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 16.15 and 49.02, while also qualifying for State in the pole vault after a second place finish. Isaac McWilliams and Shaylyn Stallbaumer each claimed one the other two first place finishes on the day winning the triple jump (43'10) and javelin (133'05), respectively. Stallbaumer also qualified in the shot put with a second place finish.

Multiple other Raiders earned spots at the State competition also behind top four performances. Maggie Hammes finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles, while Mikayla Peterson took third in the triple jump and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles to earn two spots at State. Jaci Swart qualified for State in the pole vault by taking third. Colin Lierz, Caleb Bradley and Zach Bradley all earned spots at State, too. Lierz took second in the 800 meter run and third in the 1600, while Caleb finished second in the pole vault and Zach placed third in the 110 meter hurdles.

Riverside Cyclones had all their State qualifiers come in boy’s competition helping them finish third as a team at Regionals. Andrae McGaughy led the way for Riverside as he won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.04 and took second in the 300 meter hurdles, while teaming up with Lynell Pritchard, Sheldon Harris and Adam Wagner to finish third in the 4x400 meter relay to qualify for State. Both Mason McCall and Canon Sharp each earned a spot at State for the Cyclones in the field events after taking third in the pole vault and second in the javelin, respectively.

The ACCHS Tigers earned all their State qualifiers in girl’s competition as the Tigers 4x100 and 4x800 meter relay teams each qualified for State after both taking third place. Lillie Holtgrave, Courtney Coder, Rachel Newquist and Katie Sullivan ran the 4x100 and Holtgrave partnered with Mackenzie Forber, Rebekah Scholz and Madison Bissell in the 4x800. Bissell also qualified for State in the 800 meter run after taking third place.

Northeast Kansas League teams: Pleasant Ridge, Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Horton and Oskaloosa are all sending competitors to State, also.

Pleasant Ridge will have multiple competitors at State including Regional champ, Tony Weber who won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs by posting times of 4:34.92 and 9:49.16. The Rams 4x100 meter relay boys’ team of Brandon Broddle, Kyle Lansing, Nick Holmes and Matt Smith also won gold after posting a time of 44.45. Smith qualified for three more events for the Rams taking third in the 100 meter dash and triple jump and fourth in the long jump. The Lady Rams quartet of Grace McKinney, Syvannah Williams, Carly Simonis and Mallory Wagner took second in the 4x100 meter relay to earn a State spot, while McKinney also qualified in the 200 meter dash after taking fourth. Williams also qualified in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles after a third and second place showing.

Maur Hill is sending two relay teams took State as their 4x100 meter relay team took second place and the 4x400 team took fourth. Austin Geenens, Josh Caudle, Adam Wagner and Michael Thomas teamed up on the 4x100 team for the Ravens, while Nick Caudle, Nathaniel Curry, Geenens and Wagner raced together on the 4x400 team. Curry also qualified in the 800 meter run by placing fourth and Wagner placed third in the 200 and fourth in the 400 meter dash to qualify for State. Nick Caudle also qualified for State in the triple jump by taking second place.

Horton and Oskaloosa each will have one representative at State as Trey Dishon will compete in both the shot put and discus for Horton after winning Regional title in the shot put (50'00) and taking third in the discus. Oskaloosa's Madison Miller made State by placing fourth in the discus.

Marysville who competed at the Phillipsburg Regional had five individuals and all three girls relay teams qualify for State. Bryclin Alstrom took home the lone Regional title for the Bulldogs winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.35, while also racing on the 4x800 and 4x400 meter relay teams that qualified for State. Alstrom, Aubrie Peschel, Lauren Hawkinson and Ally Kort finished second in the 4x800, while Alstrom, Kort, Rachel Heiman and Cheyenne Seematter took third in the 4x400. Heiman and Seematter teamed with Claire and Chloe Cudney in the 4x100 meter relay too take third and qualify for State. Heiman individually finished second in the 200 meter dash to earn a spot at State, while Peschel qualified in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with third place finishes. Josef Smith is the only Marysville boy’s athlete to earn a State bid taking third in the 1600 meter run.
