Lady Prospects AAU Basketball Dominate 913 Showdown

The 13U team started off the weekend by winning the 8th grade division of the 913 Showdown. In route to the championship, they defeated ABA Supreme White 35-22, the Northland Thunder Red 38-27 and the KC Blue Dogs 28-23 in the championship game.

The 13U Lady Prospects are composed of Taylor Russell(Shawnee Heights Middle School), Madison Vaught(Jeff County North Middle School), Kendall Michalski(Washburn Rural Middle School), Cameryn Thomas(Lawrence West Middle School), Megan Skoch(Seaman Middle School), Annabelle Vaught(Jeff County North Middle School), Mackenzie Bizzell(Basehor-Linwood Middle School), Hillary Krebs(Sabetha Middle School), and McKenzie Jones(Basehor-Linwood Middle School).

The 15U & 17U teams would both play in the High School Girls division of the 913 Showdown. The 15U team would secure the #1 seed in their pool by defeating the MO/Kan Eclipse White 41-35 and the KC Blue Dogs JV 41-37. The 17U team would take care of business in their pool and secure the #1 seed by defeating the Lady Bandits Blue 47-23, KC Blue Dogs Varsity 43-32 and the MO Phenom Comets 43-32.

After their pool play had concluded, both teams were surprised with a visit from former WNBA and KU player Nakia Sanford. Nakia is a 12-year WNBA veteran having played with the Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm. When she left KU, Nakia was 8th all-time in rebounding and block shots. Her talk was very inspirational and informative. The ladies really appreciated her stopping by to share her message.

They next day, both teams would now be placed in a single-elimination bracket. With a victory, they would play each other for the tournament title. 17U team defeated a scrappy MO/Kan Eclipse White team 51-42, while the 15U team took out the MO Phenom Comets 42-38. These victories set up a 17U vs. 15U championship game.

The 17U jumped out early with a 11-2 lead, but the 15U team fought back and tied the game at 18 at halftime. The game went back & forth to start the 2nd half, until the 15U jumped out to a 26-20 lead halfway through the half. But the 17U team never lost their composure and kept fighting. On the strength of a big four-point play that tied the game at 26, the 17U team took control of the game and never trailed again. They went on to defeat the 15U team, 47-42 to claim the title.

With the three teams going a combined 11-1 overall, it made for one of the most successful weekends in Lady Prospects history.

The 15U team is composed of Faith Brintle(Council Grove), Skye Dunnaway(Santa Fe Trail), Belle Edwards(Washburn Rural), Emily Gartner(Topeka Hayden), Eric Gartner(Labette County), Kate Hanson(Royal Valley), Lexia Jamison(Perry-Lecompton), Dakota McQueen(Wetmore), Carrington Ream(Metro Academy), and Jordan Van Auken(Topeka Hayden).  

The 17U roster consist of Mikaela Bennett(Bonner Springs), Deanna Burgarinovic(Blue Valley Northwest), Holly Ewert(Pleasant Ridge), Corie Fischer(Ottawa), Jessica Keehn(Jackson Heights), Madelyn Moya(Lansing), Nicole Ohlde(Linn), Marissa Pope(Lawrence), Kaleigh Taylor(Bonner Springs), Courtney Wagner(KC Piper), Jordan Wagner(KC Piper), and Haley White(KC Piper).
