It was a pleasant welcome for new ACCHS head football coach Nick Fuemmeler on Friday night as he watched his new squad put on an offensive show knocking off Big 7 league opponent Hiawatha 52-27 to begin the  2014 football season.

The first quarter started off slow for both teams with the only score of the quarter coming on the first drive of the game for ACCHS that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Joey Landwehr. A two point conversion by Logan Bowen gave the Tigers an 8-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The scoring really got started in the second quarter beginning with another touchdown run by Landwehr, this time a 72-yard run for the senior giving the Tigers a 13-0 lead after a failed extra point attempt. It took until the 3:56 mark of the first half before the Redhawks were able to get their first points of 2014 which came on 1-yard run from Brenden Steele cutting the Tiger deficit to 6, but ACCHS would answer right back on an 8-yard touchdown scamper by Logan Bowen giving the Tigers a 20-7 advantage going into the break.

After kicking the ball away to begin the ballgame, the Redhawks would receive the ball to start the second half and in the third quarter were able to outscore the Tigers 13-12 on two more touchdowns by Steel with one being a 69-yard reception from quarterback Ryker Smith allowing Hiawatha to keep within striking distance. In the quarter, ACCHS used touchdowns by Lane Bowen and Landwehr once again to give them the 32-20 lead heading into the final quarter.

Heading into the fourth quarter the Tigers decided they would continue to feed the big man in the backfield as Landwehr opened up the scoring in the quarter with a 20-yard touchdown giving him his fourth score of the evening and ACCHS never looked back after that scoring two more times on runs by Logan and Lane Bowen respectively leading to the eventual 52-27 victory. The lone bright spot for the Redhawks in that fourth quarter came on a 3-yard touchdown run by Smith but the Tiger offense proved to be too tough to stop as they were able to run away with it giving them their first win of 2014.

ACCHS opened up the 2014 season with a big win under new head coach Nick Fuemmeler after making the switch to the former Doniphan West Mustang head coach. The Tigers got off to a hot start and never looked back and were paced by Joey Landwehr as the senior rushed for well over the 150-yard mark and four scores  leading ACCHS to the victory. They will now turn their attention to another Big 7 league opponent in Sabetha which will be huge task heading into week two.

The lone bright spot for the Redhawks in the loss came from senior Brenden Steele who finished with 159-yards on 24 carries for two scores to go along with a 69-yard touchdwon reception as well. Next week looks to be another tough task for Hiawatha as they will host the Panthers of Royal Valley in another Big 7 league contest.
