Jeff West Takes Third, Nemaha Central Fourth & JCN Sixth at Wamego Volleyball Invite

A pair of Big Seven League schools and one Northeast Kansas League squad took their volleyball talents to the Wamego Invitational over the weekend and hit the court for the action.

At the end of the competition it was the Jeff West Tigers coming away with the best area team performance finishing third after topping fellow Big Seven squad Nemaha Central in the third place match, giving the Thunder a fourth place finish. The Jefferson County North Chargers out of the NEKL went home with a sixth place finish at the Wamego Invitational.

The day opened up with pool play and in Pool A it was the host Wamego claiming the first in pool play going 4-0 in competition but the Thunder of Nemaha Central followed them finished second in the pool going 3-1 in pool play. The Thunder dispatched Jefferson County North in straight sets 25-23, 25-10, beat Santa Fe Trail in straight sets also 25-13, 25-13 and topped Riley County 25-19, 25-17. The lone loss in pool play was to Wamego as the Thunder fell in a tough three set battle, 25-18, 18-25, 26-24. For JCN they finished 1-3 in pool play with their win coming against Santa Fe Trail winning in three sets 25-23, 21-25, 25-23. The Chargers fell to Nemaha Central and Wamego (25-12, 25-8) both in straight sets, but took Riley County to three sets but lost 18-25, 25-22, 25-13.

In Pool B, the Jeff West Tigers finished second behind Blue Valley (OP) who went 4-0 in pool play. The Tigers lone pool play loss was to Blue Valley who won in straight sets 25-12, 25-20, while the Tigers pounced on both Circle (25-21, 25-17) and St. Mary's (25-11, 25-19) for straight set wins and won in three sets over Rock Creek, 25-24, 15-25, 25-14 to finish pool play 3-1.

With second play showings in pool play both Jeff West and Nemaha Central made it to the Semifinals, but both would take losses in the Semi's. Blue Valley picked up the 25-14, 25-14 straight set win over Nemaha Central, while Wamego won 25-11, 25-23 over Jeff West.

That sent the Tigers and Thunder into a matchup between each other for third place in which Jeff West picked up the win 27-25, 25-17 to place third and finish the day 4-2, to improve to 17-4 on the season. For the Thunder they wrapped up the action at the Wamego Invitational with a 3-3 record and moved to 13-5 mark on the season taking fourth at the tournament.

For JCN they took on Circle for fifth place on the day and the Chargers fell in straight sets 25-12, 25-11 to finish the day just 1-4 and move to 10-12 on the season.

All three teams now turn their attention on the court to League action again when they get back on action on Tuesday, October 1st.
