TVL & Area Nebraska Schools Face Off at Axtell Volleyball Invite

Five Twin Valley League schools and three area Nebraska schools squared off in volleyball action at the Axtell Invitational over the weekend, with Diller Odell claiming the tournament title.

The action started off with pool play and in Pool A it was the Linn Bulldogs going 3-0 to lead the way in the pool, as the Bulldogs picked up a straight set win over Lewiston 25-10, 25-19, three set win over Frankfort 25-13, 19-25, 25-16 and three set win over Axtell 24-26, 25-20, 25-21. The host Axtell Eagles finished second in the pool going 2-1, picking up a pair of three set wins, beating Lewiston 24-26, 25-19, 25-9 and topping Frankfort 23-25, 25-19, 25-20. Frankfort picked up a win in pool play going 1-2, beating Lewiston 22-25, 25-13, 25-23, as Lewiston went 0-4 in pool play action.

In Pool B, it was Diller Odell pacing the competition going 3-0 behind a three straight set wins, beating Falls City Sacred Heart 25-19, 25-20, topping Blue Valley-Randolph 25-17, 25-17 and taking down Valley Heights 25-14, 25-21. The Mustangs of Valley Heights finished second in the pool going 2-1, picking up a straight set win over Blue Valley-Randolph 25-19, 25-8 and a three set win over Falls City Sacred Heart 25-10, 24-26, 27-25. Falls City Sacred Heart picked up a win in pool play going 1-2, beating Blue Valley-Randolph 25-13, 25-9.

Moving on into Semifinal action it was Frankfort beat Blue Valley-Randolph in three sets 25-14, 12-25, 25-20 and Falls City Sacred Heart beating Lewiston 25-10, 25-7 in the consolation semifinals. Setting up Lewiston versus Blue Valley-Randolph match for seventh place, in which Lewiston won in three sets 25-20, 17-25, 26-24, while Falls City Sacred Heart topped Frankfort 25-18, 25-16 to earn fifth place at the Axtell Invitational. Lewiston finished the tournament going 1-4, Blue Valley-Randolph went 0-5, Frankfort finished 2-3 and Falls City Sacred Heart notched a 3-2 record.

In the championship bracket Semifinals it was Valley Heights taking on Linn and Diller Odell against Axtell. The Mustangs topped in the Bulldogs in a tough three set competition 13-25, 25-21, 25-15, while Diller Odell beat Axtell 25-19, 25-21.

That set up a pool play rematch of Valley Heights and Diller Odell in which Diller Odell won again, beating the Mustangs 25-21, 25-12, giving Diller Odell a 5-0 record on the day and the Axtell Invitational title. The Mustangs finished the competition 3-2.

In the third place match it was the host Axtell Eagles getting revenge for a pool play loss to Linn by beating the Bulldogs in three sets 21-25, 26-24, 25-17 to claim third. Both Axtell and Linn finished the day with a 3-2 record in tournament action.
