Top 5 Kanzaland Sports Moments of 2014 -- Top 5's in Different Sports

The year of 2014 has been one to remember for the Kanzaland area with high school teams from the KNZA/KMZA/KAIR radio listening area performing well in multiple sports. Below we take a look at the Top 5 2014 moments in the sports of football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, track and field, cross country and an other sports category for the remaining sports for area schools. 
 
Top 5 Categories include – High school football, High school basketball, High School volleyball, High School wrestling, High School track and field, High School cross country and High School Other Sports (baseball, softball, tennis and etc.)
 
Top 5 Football Moments: 
1. Hanover returns to State Title game for first time since 2009 & finishes as State Runner-up in 8-Man Division I, finishing with a 12-1 record.
 
2. Troy makes first ever trip to 2-1A Sub-State and finishes season with a 10-2 record.
 
3. Axtell earns playoff spot for first time since 2008 and makes Sub-State game in 8-Man Division II, finishing year 9-3.
 
4. Horton wins NEKL title, going 5-0 in League play, while finishing year 7-2 and making 3A playoffs for first time since 2008.
 
5. Centralia and Holton both continue their dominance in the TVL and Big Seven, winning League title's for the 17th and 7th straight year, respectively.
 
Top 5 Basketball Moments: 
1. B&B girls & boys add to Falcon Legacy in final season, by winning the 1A-DII State title and finishing third, respectively. (Girls finished season 24-3, Boys finished 19-8) 
 
2. Valley Heights girls & boys both post best records in school history and make State, finishing State Runner-up and third, respectively. (Girls finished season 24-2, Boys finished 23-3)
 
3. Nemaha Valley girls & boys each take third at State in 3A in the final year as Raiders. (Girls finished season 21-5, Boys finished 23-3)
 
4. JCN girls finish as 2A Runner-up for the second straight year and finished the season 25-1.
 
5. Both Holton & Washington County had girls and boy’s teams make State in 4A-DII and 2A, respectively and both girls’ teams earned third place at State. (Holton girls finished 17-8, boys finished 17-6) (Washington County girls finished 22-3, boys finished 14-9) 
 
Top 5 Volleyball Moments:
1. Centralia won its 12th State volleyball title in school history and finished the year with a 44-1 record.
 
2. Washington County won the 2A State title for the second time in the last three years, finishing the season 39-4.
 
3. Royal Valley in their first ever appearance at State in volleyball, finished third in 4A-DII and posted a 26-16 record on the year.
 
4. Axtell returned to State for first time since 2005 and placed third at State in 1A-DII and finished the year 28-16.
 
5. Nemaha Central makes 3A State tournament, continue the strong volleyball history of B&B and Nemaha Valley, posting a 32-14 record.
 
Top 5 Wrestling Moments: 
1. Holton successfully defends 4A team wrestling State title, behind six wrestlers with Top six finishes.

2. Justin Scott of Jeff West, wins a State title for the second straight year in 4A. This year winning the State title at 285lbs (in 2013 at 220lbs).
 
3. Tristan Speer of Troy goes 33-0 and wins the 3-2-1A State title at 195lbs in his junior year.
 
4. Lucas Lovvorn of Holton, wins 152lbs 4A State title, helping Holton win the 4A team State Championship for the second straight year.
 
5. ACCHS takes fourth place as a team at 3-2-1A State, as five guys claimed Top six finishes at State.

Top 5 Track Moments: 
1. Centralia boys won 1A State title, behind 10 Top eight finishes in competition with seven competitors at State.
 
2. Valley Heights girls won 1A State title, behind eight Top eight finishes, which included seven of the eight being third place or better, including two State titles. The lady Mustangs won the State title with only
three competitors in those eight events.
 
3. Washington County boys placed second in 2A; earning second behind seven Top eight finishes including three State titles by Dylan Hodgson (who set two State records).
 
4. Hiawatha girls placed third in 3A, using nine Top eight finishes earning third place as a team, including one State title.
 
5. Hanover boys placed third in 1A, using six Top eight finishes, including two State titles to take third.
 
Top 5 Cross Country Moments:
1. Hiawatha girls finished second in 3A; led by Jordan Puvogel who finished fourth, while the Red Hawks had five Top 40 finishes and all seven competitors finished 68th or better.
 
2. Pleasant Ridge boys finished second in 3A; led by Luke Oatney who finished ninth, while all seven Rams finished 64th or better.
 
3. Centralia girls finished third in 1A; led by Sadie Jones who finished eighth, while a total of three Panthers finished in the Top 40 and all five competitors finished 72nd or better.
 
4. Sarah Jaloma of Atchison finished third in Class 4A.
 
5. ACCHS girls finished fifth in 3A; led by Madison Bissell who finished eighth, while all six Tiger competitors placed 88th or better.
 
Top 5 Other Sports Moments (baseball, softball, tennis & etc): 
1. Centralia boy’s golf won 1A State title, led by Ryan Vernon who won the 1A individual State title.
 
2. Sabetha boy’s golf placed third after winning the State title the previous year.
 
3. Perry Lecompton baseball finishes strong season as Runner-up in 4A-DII.
 
4. Jeff West Tigers close softball season taking third place in 4A-DII.
 
5. Troy Trojans post strong baseball season placing fourth in 2-1A.
 
HM -- Sabetha Bluejays girl’s tennis earns pair of 11th place finishes at 3-2-1A State competition (Lexi Wenger in singles & Jordyn Wells and Alex Menold in doubles)
