ACCHS Takes Third as Team & Four Area Individuals Win Titles at Rossville Wrestling Invite

Multiple area schools took to the mats on Saturday as part of the Rossville Invitational, some in their first action since the Holiday break and some in their second competition since the returning to school.

Of the six teams competing on the day, the eight area teams had two finishes in the Top five and four in the Top 10. The ACCHS Tigers lead the charge for the area teams as the Tigers posted 171 total points to claim third place, led by 11 medalists. Pleasant Ridge Rams notched 133.5 points to claim fifth place, using an individual champion and nine other medalists to earn fifth. Sabetha and Doniphan West placed eighth and ninth, respectively with 96 and 83.5 points, while Hiawatha/Horton took 12th, Perry Lecompton finished 13th, Maur Hill-Mount Academy 14th and Immaculata 16th. Santa Fe Trail and Clay Center finished first and second on the day posting 206 and 193 total points.

Individually the day on the mats at the Rossville Invitational was highlighted by four individual champs and multiple medals for all the area teams. 

Doniphan West notched two of the four area individual champions on the day as Kody Collins (182lbs) and Tristan Speer (195lbs) of Troy both earned individual titles. Collins continues this strong season by posting a 3-0 day on the mats picking up three pinfall victories to claim in the 182lbs title, while Speer also had a 3-0 day with a pair of pinfall wins ans a 15-0 technical fall. Only two other Mustang grapplers notched Top eight performances as Alex Martinez (138lbs) & Zeb Speer (145lbs) both earned fifth place finishes by going 2-2 and 3-2, respectively on the mats.

Sabetha and Pleasant Ridge had the other two individual champions between them on the four area individual champions on the day. For Sabetha Brandon Poe posted a 3-0 day at 170lbs to earn first place picking up a win via pin, a 9-0 major decision win and won the title with a 2-1 decision. The Bluejays had 10 other medalists on the day also, including a third place finish by Seth Harrell at 113lbs as he went 4-1 on the mat. Kyler Krebs (152lbs) grabbed a fifth place performance, while his teammate Kaid Allen (182lbs) earned sixth place. Six Bluejays including: Brandon Brownlee (120lbs), Nate Niehues (138lbs), Matt Burdick (145lbs), Austin Garber (160lbs), Blaine Rokey (195lbs) and Taylor Meyer (220lbs) all earned seventh place, while Cobrin Halls (132lbs) placed eighth.

For Pleasant Ridge, Colt Evans at 138lbs lead the charge on their way to a fifth place team finish as he earned the individual title in his weight class after going 4-0. Evans opened up action with a pinfall win, followed that up with a 8-0 major decision win and then a 7-6 win to get to the Championship. In the Championship bout Evans picked up the title with a pinfall win. David Medley had the second best performance on the mats for the Rams placing third at 285lbs after posting a 4-1 record on the day. The Rams also had three fourth place and fifth place finishes with Luke Oatney (106lbs), Brandon Broddle (120lbs), Colton Doty (220lbs) all take fourth place and Devin Dorr (113lbs), Nick Hyde (160lbs), Robert Mcmanigle (195lbs) all earning fifth place. Nic Bridges (145lbs) also earned sixth place, while Dustin Graham (182lbs) placed seventh for the Rams.

The ACCHS Tigers had the best team performance on the day and had 11 medalists on the day including four second place finishes. Karl Schulz (106lbs), Hunter Ostertag (120lbs). Logan Bowen (145lbs) and Jacob Handke (195lbs) all earned second place after going 2-1 on the mat. Schulz picked up two pinfall wins, but fell 17-4 major decision in Championship bout, while Ostertag had a pin and 5-1 decision win, but fell by a 9-5 decision in his Championship bout. For Bowen he earned two pinfall wins, but fell by a 5-4 decision in the Championship bout and Handke earned his two wins by pin and 7-5 decision win, but fell by pinfall in the Championship bout.

Joey Landwehr (170lbs), Dillon Weaver (182lbs) and Bratten Forbes (220lbs) all three earned third place performances after posting 3-1, 4-1 and 4-1 records, respectively for the Tigers. While, Ryan Hanshaw (285lbs) earned fourth place for ACCHS and Austin Hager (113lbs) and Dylan Birkinsha (152lbs) borth placed sixth. Nick Hager also finished in the Top eight for the Tigers placing eighth at 138lbs.

Hiawatha/Horton had five wrestlers earn a Top eight finish or better, while Perry Lecompton at had four, Maur Hill had three and Immaculata just one.

Damon Bamfield (106lbs) lead Hiawatha/Horton on the day going 2-1 on the mats to place third, while  Stephen Welch (126lbs) took home a fifth place finish and Joey Simpson (285lbs) placed sxith. Lukas Hollday (132lbs) took home seventh place and Keenan Hinton (220lbs) placed eighth for two other Top eight finishes for Hiawatha/Horton at the Rossville Invitational

Perry Lecompton was led on the day by Peyton Kahle (132lbs) who posted a 2-1 record with a pair of wins via decision 11-8 and 11-5 to earn second place. While, Hunter Barnes (106lbs), Torin Vannest (152lbs) and Nick Quinlan (160lbs) placed sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively for the Kaws

For the Maur Hill Ravens a third place finish by Blake Wilson (132lbs) led the performances on the mat as he posted a 4-1 record on the day. Benedict Humberg (126lbs) and Chase Montgomery (152lbs) both also notched Top eight finishes for Maur Hill finishing seventh and eighth place, respectively.

While for Immaculata it was Kristian Barrientos earning the only Top eight finishes on the day as he placed eighth in his weight class of 120lbs.

The Rossville Invitational featured may top notch area performances and all the area teams will continue their wrestling season in the weeks to come.
