Jeff West and Oskaloosa Highlight Atchison Final Flurry with Second & Third Place Team Finishes

The Jeff West Tigers and Oskaloosa Bears grapplers highlighted the day for the area at the Final Flurry in Atchison on Saturday, while three other area schools also competed on the day with 12 total teams in the competition.

Jeff West posted 139 total points to claim second place as a team finishing just six points off of first place that was earned by Turner High School. Oskaloosa followed Jeff West in the team finishes posting 110 points to claim third place. Hiawatha, Atchison and Maur Hill-Mount Academy finished ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively.

Nine top four finishes paced Jeff West on the day, as Sam Shenk (195lbs) led the way with an individual championship by going 4-0 on the mats at the Final Flurry. Shenk picked up all four wins via pinfall winning in 1:10, 3:32, :41 and :37. Three Tigers earned second place finishes as Kody Gibson (120lbs), Nicholas Reeb (152lbs) and Michael Majors (285lbs) all brought home silver medals individually. Gibson notched a 2-1 day with two pinfall wins, but fell via pinfall in the Championship bout, while also went 2-1 on the day with a pin and sudden victory (6-4) wins, put fell by pin in his Championship bout. Majors like his teammates that took home second also went 2-1 with a pair of pinfall wins.

Three more Tigers claimed third place finishes as Lucas Holloman (106lbs), Austin Michaelis (113lbs) and Branden Callahan (126lbs) all had third place finishes. Holloman and Callahan both put together a 3-1 day’s on the mats, while Michaelis finished the day’s action with a 3-2 record. Both Ryan Wisner (132lbs) and Chase Montgomery (160lbs) earned fourth place finishes going 2-2 on the mats at the Final Flurry.

Oskaloosa went home from the Final Flurry with seven Top four finishers, including a pair of individual champions. Mark Nickels (126lbs) and Adam Perkins (220lbs) both finished the day undefeated and each picking up first place finishes after each going 3-0. Nickels had two pinfall wins and a sudden victory (2-0), while Perkins won all three of his matches via pinfall. Ben Harvey (170lbs) and Jared Miller (145lbs) each brought home second place finishes after going 2-1. Harvey earned a 13-6 decision win and win via forfeit, while Miller had two pinfall wins. A third place finish was earned by Griffon Matney (152lbs) after a 3-1 day, while Vince Dick (285lbs) and Hannah Nave (120lbs) each picked up fourth place finishes.

A pair of second place performances highlighted the Hiawatha Red Hawks day at the Final Flurry in Atchison as Keenan Hinton (220lbs) and Damon Bamfield (106lbs) both finished second. Hinton posted a 2-1 record picking up a pair of pinfall wins, while Bamfield went 1-1 on the day with a pinfall win.

Three Atchison Redmen picked up Top five finishes at their home Invitational with a second place finish by Andrew Adrian (126lbs) being the best Redmen finish on the day. Adrian posted a 2-1 record on the mats with a pair of pinfall wins. Dalton Armstrong (138lbs) and Ahrianna Franklin (113lbs) grabbed fourth and fifth place finishes, after going 2-2 and 1-4, respectively.

Maur Hill did not have any top placers on the day at the Final Flurry competition.
