Valley Falls Girls Take Care of Troy, Earn a Spot at the Class 2A State Tournament
By Jonny Kane

The Valley Falls Lady Dragons felt heartbreak a season ago when they saw their chance to go to the Class 2A State Tournament go up in smoke to the hands of Jefferson County North. This year was a much different story for the Lady Dragons in the finals as they knocked off the Troy Lady Trojans 41-24 in Valley Falls on Saturday night.

The first half was a game of runs for both sides and it began with Valley Falls jumping out to a 9-2 lead after the first quarter. Troy responded though at the start of the second frame as they went on an 8-2 run to pull within one at 11-10 with 6:00 left in the half. The Lady Dragons then came right back with a 12-2 run on their own giving them a 23-12 heading into intermission.

The third quarter was the most competitive of the ballgame with the two sides trading baskets throughout, but it was Valley who was able to head into the final stanza with a 32-20 lead. The Lady Dragons then just simply played keep away from Troy in the fourth quarter and played good defense as well holding Troy to just four points in the final quarter, which ultimately allowed them to come away with the win.

Troy was led in scoring by seniors Breanna Smith and Alex Winder as they each had seven points in the loss and end their season with a 13-11 overall record.

Ali Brown led the charge for Valley Falls in the win as she had 14 points, while Jenna Kramer chipped in nine of her own. The Lady Dragons push their record to 21-2 overall on the season with the win, which is already four wins more than a season ago.

Valley Falls will now head to the Girls Class 2A State Tournament at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas which is set to begin on Wednesday afternoon.
