Washington County Boys Earn Return Trip to State, While Girls Suffer Heartbreaking Loss

The Washington County Tigers were looking to make it back-to-back years in which both the girls and boys basketball teams each qualify for State. On Saturday night the boys picked up the 47-44 win over Bennington to return to the 2A State tournament, the lady Tigers saw their chance to return to State snatched away by Wabaunsee who won 43-40.

The night started off with the lady Tigers vying for a spot at State against Wabaunsee and Washington County was fell down 14-8 after the first quarter. Tigers answered the call in the second quarter outscoring Wabaunsee 17-8 to take the lead at the midway point, leading 25-22 at the half. Wabaunsee took the lead back in the third quarter behind a 14-5 period and lead 36-30 after three and went on to hold off Washington County for the 43-40 win.

The loss brings Washington County's season to an end as they finish with a 21-2 record. Erin Alexander paced the Tigers in the loss with 10 points, while Courtney Moore scored nine points.

In the nightcap the Washington County Tiger boys had a tough matchup against Bennington but notched the 47-44 win to return to the State tournament were the Tigers were last year. Holding just a 19-18 lead at the half Washington County used a 16-11 third quarter to give themselves a bit of a cushion and enough to lead them past Bennington for the 2A Sub-State title at Wakefield.

With the win the Tigers improved to 20-3 on the season and were led by Konner Penning in the victory as he posted 11 points. Kyle McGatlin and Cole Thompson added 10 and eight points, respectively in the Tiger victory.

The Washington County boys will head back to the State tournament at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan next week as they will hit the court on Wednesday for opening round action.
