Washington County Claw Past South Gray to Earn 2A State First Round Win

For the second straight year the Washington County Tiger boys headed to the Class 2A State tournament and unlike last year the Tigers while be having an extended stay in Manhattan after a come from behind opening round win over South Gray, winning 71-57.

It was a close game throughout the competition as Washington County worked out to the 14-13 advantage after one quarter, but trailed at halftime 30-27 to South Gray. That lead was two-points for South Gray going into the fourth quarter, but about midway through the fourth the Tigers worked to take the lead. That lead grew continuously down the way as Washington County closed out the game with a 24-8 fourth quarter to claim the 71-57 win.

Leading the way for the Tigers was the fact the team shot 60% from the floor hitting 30-50 shots in the game with a trio of guys pacing the way accounting for 58 of the teams 71 points. Konnor Penning led the way with 27 points going 11-14 from the floor and added six rebounds and three steals to his line, while Kyle McGatlin posted 21 points on 8-16 shooting and Andrew Tiemeyer scored 10 points.

The win pushes the Tigers to 21-3 on the season and into the Semifinals of the 2A State tournament as their fifth trip to the State tournament will continue on Friday against a 24-0, St. John-Hudson team at 8:15pm. (Other Semifinal - Central Plains vs. Olpe)
