Twenty Eight NEKS Area Basketball Stars Named to KBCA All-State Teams

It was another stellar basketball season in Northeast Kansas and the Kanzaland area as many teams enjoyed great performances and 28 area athletes have been honored by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association with All-State honors.

Class 4A-Division II featured a pair of area teams at the State tournament this year in the Jeff West lady Tigers and the Atchison Redmen boys. Both teams had a player earn All-State honors from the KBCA also as Jeff West senior, Olivia Brees earned second team honors, while Atchison junior, Wykeen Gill earned first team. Holton Wildcat senior, Garett Beecher picked up second team All-State honors and his teammate fellow senior, Trey Tanking got the honorable mention nod, while Jeff West senior, Jacob Dickey also earned honorable mention All-State in 4A-DII.

Four Big Seven basketball stars earned All-State honors from the KBCA in Class 3A with a pair of Sabetha Bluejays leading the way after the boys finished third at State and the girls fourth. Senior, Kellen Russell added to his postseason honors with a first team All-State honor, while junior, Alexis McAfee picked up second team All-State honors. Nemaha Central Thunder junior, Luke Holthaus and Hiawatha Red Hawk junior, Emily Gartner both got the All-State nod with honorable mention honors after solid years on the court.

Class 2A features five area athlete's earning KBCA All-State honors with Jackson Heights Cobra junior, Zane Richter getting first team honors after helping his team to the State tournament. Washington County junior, Konnor Penning helped the Tigers to a third place finish at State this year and earned second team All-State, while Tiger senior, Erin Alexander picked up honorable mention honors. Valley Falls lady Dragons finished fourth at State this year and junior, Ali Brown helped lead the team earning her second team All-State. Troy Trojan senior, Collin Jasper also earned All-State honors in Class 2A getting the nod for honorable mention honors.

The Twin Valley League highlighted the Class 1A-Division I KBCA All-State teams with 12 area athlete's getting All-State honors. Eight of the 12 came on the boy’s side of competition with four Hanover Wildcats earning All-State after winning the 1A-DI State title. Sophomore, Will Bruna led the charge with first team honors while senior, Andrew Bruna got second team and seniors, Hunter Nicholson and Austin Diederich both picked up honorable mention honors. Doniphan West Mustang boys who finished runner-up at State to Hanover had a pair of All-State honorees as junior, Cooper Leach picked up first team honors and senior, Jeffrey Watts was named honorable mention. Valley Heights Mustang senior, Elijah Smith earned second team All-State, while Frankfort Wildcat senior, Jacob Studer grabbed honorable mention honors.

On the girls side in Class 1A-DI the lady Panthers of Centralia brought home a runner-up trophy at State and had two players named to the KBCA All-State team. Sophomore, Cassidy Haufler picked up first team honors, while senior, Liz Hasenkamp registered second team honors. Valley Heights Mustangs, Sidney Blackburn (senior) and Brandi Jo Roepke (junior) each earned All-State picking up first team and honorable mention honors, respectively.

Class 1A-Division II had two TVL athletes earn All-State honorable mention honors as a Wetmore sophomore, Dakota McQueen and Axtell junior, Kiersten Talbot both picked up the honors. McQueen helped lead the Cardinals to the 1A-DII State tournament.
