It felt like baseball weather on Monday and both Troy and Riverside were ready to get their high school baseball seasons underway as the Cyclones host the Trojans for a double-header.

Troy coming off a trip to State last year started off this season with a pair of victories claiming the 7-4 and 16-1 wins over Riverside in Wathena.

The action started with Troy getting four runs early in game one, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter in the top of the second and went on to lead 7-0 during the contest. Riverside didn't go way quietly as Troy replaced starter Nathan Gaarder who went five innings giving up just one hit, a walk and struck out six and Riverside got to Alex Schmille slightly plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth, with the inning highlighted by a two RBI double from Quenton Munger. The Cyclones down to their final three outs did manage to get another run in the seventh but Troy held on for the 7-4 win.

Gaarder picked up the pitching victory for th Trojans, while Schmille and Brody Winder highlighted the offense each notching a double in the game, while finishing with two and one run scored, respectively. Alec Miller led the offense for Riverside with two hits in the loss, while Cade Wendt took the loss on the mound for the Cyclones.

In the nightcap it was all Troy from the start as the Trojans jumped on Riverside early, winning 16-1 in just four innings of action. Trojans took advantage of 10 walks in the game making Riverside pay for the free passes, as Troy lead 3-0 before taking the field for defense. Two more runs were added in the top of the second by Troy as a two RBI single by Gaarder highlighted the frame; the Trojans then added three more runs in the Top of the third to lead 8-0 going into the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the third Riverside took their goose egg off the scoreboard as Josh Mitchell was hit by a pitch and upon a Troy error ultimately came around to score, making it 8-1 going into the fourth.

Things unraveled for Riverside in the fourth as Troy doubled up their score batting around in the inning and facing three Cyclone pitchers. Wil Smith led inning off with a double and Chris Winkel followed with an RBI double and then four walks came for Troy and Gaarder later cleared the base pads with a three RBI double. The game headed to the bottom of the fourth with Riverside needing a run to continue the game and the Cyclones got a few base runners via a Troy error and a walk but came up short falling 16-1 in four innings.

Tristan Speer picked up the pitching victory going three innings giving up one run on one-hit and an hit batter, while striking out two. Gaarder highlighted the offense going 3-4 with a double two runs scored and six RBI's, while Schmille was 1-1 with three walks and four runs scored. Every Trojan scored at least one run in the win with seven of the nine spots in the lineup scoring at least twice in the game.

Riverside in the loss had their lone hit from Seth Bembrick coming in the first inning and only had four total base runners in the contest.

With the double-header sweep Troy starts the season 2-0 and Riverside starts the year 0-2.
