Sabetha Boys & Girls Claim Top Spots at Hiawatha Track Invite

The start gun fired off in Hiawatha at the track on Thursday and eight schools were off competing in action against each other.

At the end of the day it was the Sabetha Bluejay girls and boys claiming the Hiawatha Invitational track titles as the ladies finished 52 points better than anyone else and the boys won by 15.5 points. The lady Bluejays posted 152 points to claim first place, while Hiawatha took second and ACCHS third. Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Holton rounded out the Top five girls team performances, while Pleasant Ridge took sixth, Falls City seventh, Troy eighth and Horton ninth. On the boys side it was 112 points that won it for Sabetha, while Pleasant Ridge took second and Hiawatha grabbed third. Maur Hill and Holton rounded out the Top five boys girls team performances finishing fourth and fifth, while Falls City took sixth, Horton placed seventh and Troy took eighth.

The host Hiawatha Red Hawks ended the way with the most event wins with 10 between the girls and boys on the day. Both Jordan Puvogel and Emily Gartner picked up two individual event wins as Puvogel ran her way to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 5:48.96 and 12:05.65, while Gartner tossed her way to wins in the discus and shot put with tosses of 151'06 and 37'04.25. Emily with her mark in the shot put broke the Hiawatha school record. The lady Red Hawks also picked up the gold in the 4x800 meter relay, while Molly Kettler won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:04.05. Gavin Lierz swept the hurdles in the boys action to lead Hiawatha, posting times of 17.24 and 44.30 to win the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, while Brendan Steel won the long jump with a leap of 19'07. The boy’s 4x800 meter relay team also grabbed a first place finish after posting a time of 8:50.27.

Sabetha Bluejays on their way to the girls and boys team titles had eight event wins on the day with Treavor Schmelzle leading the charge as he won both the javelin (154'08) and high jump (6'00); the only other first place earned by the Sabetha boys came in the 4x400 meter relay after posting a time of 3:42.18. The lady Bluejays notched four of their first place finishes in the field events as Heidi Heiniger, Courtney Plattner, Meagan Garrett and Cassidy Holthaus all won events. Heiniger continued to dominate the javelin (132'11), while Plattner picked up gold in the long jump (15'00.50), Garrett yet again won the high jump (5'02) and Holthaus notched the top mark in the pole vault (7'00). The lady Bluejays also finished first in the 4x100 meter throwers relay with a time of 59.71.

The Holton Wildcats had seven first place finishes earned on the day at the Hiawatha Invitational with a pair of multi-event winners leading the way. Holly Karn swept the girls hurdles with times of 16.43 and 52.46 to win the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, while Will Wright sprinted to wins in the 200 and 400 meter dashes behind times of 23.74 and 51.52. Mason Strader and Kimmie Snepp also earned gold's for the Wildcats winning the boys 1600 meter run (4:49.65) and girl’s 100 meter dash (12.62), while the lady Wildcats also picked up the 4x100 meter relay win with a time of 52.74.

Pleasant Ridge Rams had first place finishes earned by Matt Smith, Gabe Younger and Grace McKinney on the day. Smith sprinted his way to the win in the 100 meter dash (11.46), Younger raced to the win in the boys 800 meter run (2:08.81) and McKinney won the girls 200 meter dash (27.21). The boy’s 4x100 meter relay team also picked up the win for the Rams using a time of 45.14.

Four other area teams had two event wins on the day as Falls City, Horton, ACCHS and Maur Hill each registered to gold medals in the individual events.

The Falls City Tigers had Justin Ernst win the pole vault (9'06) and Lee Huettner win the triple jump (42'04), while Trey Dishon claimed both of Horton's first place finishes, as he won the shot put (49'04.25) and discus (145'03). ACCHS was led by Madison Bissell and Katie Sullivan who won the girls 800 meter run (2:28.46) and triple jump (31'11.50), respectively. While for Maur Hill the girl’s 4x400 meter relay team took first with a time of 4:22.23 and Jack Siebert won the boys 3200 meter run behind a time of 10:48.11.
