Nemaha Central Sweeps Big Seven League Track Meet Titles

All nine Big Seven League teams converged in Effingham for the League track meet on Thursday and all nine had at least one event winner on the day.

Leading the way at the meet was the Nemaha Central Thunder who brought home some new hardware for the trophy cases as both the girls and boys teams claimed the League titles. For the lady Thunder they posted 142 total points to earn the League title winning by 49 points over Hiawatha who took second place, while Sabetha finished third. Jeff West and Holton girls rounded out the Top five team performances placing fourth and fifth, while ACCHS took sixth, Royal Valley seventh, Perry Lecompton eighth and Riverside ninth.

The boys race for the League title was closer than the girls as the Thunder boys notched 116.5 points to earn the League crown but topped Holton who took second by only 13.5 points. Sabetha Bluejays took home third place only nine and a half points behind Holton for second place, while Perry Lecompton and Riverside finished fourth and fifth. Hiawatha, Jeff West, Royal Valley and ACCHS finished out the team standings placing sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

Nemaha Central claimed nine first place finishes on the day between the boys and girls and it was Jacob Koelzer leading the charge winning three events. Koelzer sprinted to the gold in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 10.9 and 22.59, while leaping to the win in the long jump behind a leap of 21'02. Rachael Baumgartner also won multiple events for Nemaha Central as she took first in the 300 meter hurdles (49.35) and won the pole vault (10'03). Four other Thunder competitors grabbed gold on at the League meet as Samantha Wessel won the girls long jump (15'04.75), Zach Bradley place first in the boys 110 meter hurdles (14.97), Colin Lierz finished first in the 800 meter run (2:02.58) and Caleb Bradley won the pole vault (12'06).

Jordan Puvogel in her last Big Seven League meet swept the girls distance races for Hiawatha winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 2:20.85, 5:36.58 and 12:40.84. She was not the only lady Red Hawk multi-event winner on the day as Emily Gartner continued to dominate the competition in the shot put and discus, winning both events with throws of 35'08.75 and 146'07, respectively. The lady Red Hawks 4x800 meter relay team also claimed gold after posting a time of 10:14.90, while the lone boys event win for Hiawatha came in the 4x800 meter relay (8:35.94).

Six first place finishes at League highlighted the action for Holton with Kimmie Snepp leading the charge as she sprinted past the competition once again winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.46 and 26.12. The lady Wildcats also won the 4x100 meter relay (51.73), while the boys claimed first in the same event, too with a time of 45.04. Mason Strader and Indee Allen each registered a first place finish for the Wildcats in the boys action as Strader won the 1600 meter run (4:44.04) and Allen took first in the triple jump (42'02).

For the Sabetha Bluejays it was Meagan Garrett, Heidi Heiniger, Keegan Cox and Eric Renyer highlighting the League event as they each brought home a gold medal. Garrett continued to excel in the high jump, winning the girls competition with a leap of 5'06, while a toss of 137'00 won the girls javelin for Heiniger. In the boys action Cox posted a time of 10:49.84 to win the 3200 meter run, while Renyer with a toss of 47'02 won the shot put.

Mariah Murdie led the Jeff West Tigers at the League meet as she won the 100 meter hurdles (15.79) and the triple jump (35'08.75), while the lady Tigers also won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:18.36. On the boys side of action it was Michael Majors highlighting things for Jeff West as he won the discus with a toss of 138'00.50.

Four first place finishes by the boys for Perry Lecompton highlighted the Kaws day as they won the 4x400 meter relay (3:29.85), Cole Kellum took first in the 400 meter dash (50.88) and Austin Kurtz tossed his way to the gold in the javelin (162'11).

ACCHS, Riverside and Royal Valley each had one event winner on the day at the Big Seven League meet. For the ACCHS Tigers, Madison Bissell won the girls 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.58, while Riverside was led by Andrae McGaughy who won the boys 300 meter hurdles behind a time of 40.78. Patrick Broxterman brought home the gold for Royal Valley as he won the high jump with a leap of 6'04.
