Twin Valley League Dominates Class 1A at Kansas State Track Meet

Class 1A competition at the State track meet in Wichita at Cessna stadium belonged to the Twin Valley League with a multitude of great performances including two team State Champions and 15 individual event State titles.

The Hanover Wildcat boys and Linn Bulldog girls brought home the big team hardware by both winning Class 1A team State track titles. Four event wins by Hanover pushed them to 74 total points, winning the State title by 24 points, while Linn used a second place in the final event of the day to push ahead by 3.33 points for the 1A State title. Valley Heights Mustang boys and girls both finished in second place in the team standings.

Valley Heights picked up the most State titles individually as seven were won with 15 total medals earned by Mustang athletes. Elijah Smith closed out his high school track career in impressive fashion by winning all four of his events, posting times of 14.94 and 39.56 to claim the gold in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and leaping to wins in the long jump (22’08.50) and triple jump (48’09.75). Smith’s mark in the triple jump set a new 1A State record and was the third state for him in that event; he also won the 110 meter hurdles for the third time and the long jump for the second time. His younger sister, Kayla Smith picked up a pair of State titles herself by leaping to wins in the long jump (17’04.75) and triple jump (36’00), while Sidney Blackburn won the discus in her senior year by registering a toss of 123’04, winning the event for the second time.

Kayla Smith added a fourth place finish in the 100 meter dash and partner with Taylor Doner, Skyler Sanders and Nicole Weyer to take fourth in the girls 4x100 meter relay. Shelby Vermetten notched a silver medal and fifth place finish in the discus and shot put, respectively, while Adrian Pishny placed sixth and eighth in the boys 3200 and 1600 meter runs. Both Anthony Edwards and Logan Woodyard each leapt to medals, as Edwards took eighth in the high jump and Woodyard fifth in the triple jump.

For the Hanover Wildcats they pretty much saw a medal picked up in any event they had a competitor in at State track. Leading the way was the Wildcat boys relay teams with a sweep of the State titles wining the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800. The team of Trey Loshe, Paden Pralle, Michael Jueneman and Adam Zarybnicky posted a time of 8:31.15 to win the 4x800, while Hanover set State records in the prelims in the 4x100 and 4x400 with times of 43.30 and 3:25.10. In the finals Devin Jueneman stepped in for Evan Zabokrtsky to partner with Matthew White, Andrew Bruna and Preston Jueneman in the 4x100 and won with a time of 43.85, while Devin and Preston Jueneman and White ran with Trey Loshe in the 4x400 and in the finals notched a time of 3:30.61 to win. Preston Jueneman also picked up the gold in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.27, while taking second in the 200 meter dash.

Both White and Devin Jeuneman added other medals to performances at State track as White took second in the 100 and third in the 400 meter dash, while Jueneman placed third in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump. Ethan Fritschi tossed his was to fourth place in the shot put, while Claire Zarybnicky took second in the 800 meter run. The team of Claire Zarybnicky, Morganne Zabokrtsky, Pamela Zarybnicky and Ashton Jueneman placed fourth in the 4x800 meter relay and both Claire and Pamela partnered with Riley Doebele and Taylor Klipp to finish sixth in the 4x400 meter relay.

Eight medals by the lady Bulldogs of Linn pushed them to the 1A team State title with the team of Karsyn Smith, Brooke Diederich, Kesiah Thalmann and Kendra Bargman leading the way by winning the 4x100 meter relay for a second time, posting a time of 51.56. Bargman added a second place in the 100 and third in the 200 meter dash, while Diederich took fourth in the 400 meter dash and third in the long jump. Kaylie Rahe picked up the bronze in the 300 meter hurdles and Shelby Ohlde tied for second in the high jump. On the boys side it was a pair of second place finishes for Grant Cook in the javelin and discus, while Chad Gross took fourth in the high jump and Micah Dieckmann placed seventh in the javelin.

Darrian Turner led the way for the Centralia Panthers sprinting to the State title in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.86, while also taking fifth place in the long jump. Eight other Panthers earned Top eight performances at State track including third place performances by Wyatt VanDorn and Tara Bergman in the boy’s pole vault and girl’s discus. Liz Hasenkamp and Sadie Jones each picked up a fifth place finish in the girl’s javelin and girls 3200 meter run, while Joey Ferron placed sixth in the boy’s shot put. Chelsea Huerter  earned a seventh place finish in the girls pole vault with Breanna Hasenkamp her teammate tying for eighth in the same event and Stephan LeBlanc also registered an eighth place finish coming in the boys pole vault.

The Axtell Eagles were led at State track by Bradie Schmitz who behind a time of 1:00.21 won the girl’s 400 meter dash, while also racing with Courtney Heinen, Chelsea Smith and Kiersten Talbot to place fifth in the 4x800 meter relay and eighth in the 4x400 meter relay. Talbot added an eighth place finish in the 1600 meter run to her State track showing, while Mariah Deters tied for second in the girls high jump for the Eagles. For the boys a fourth place finish by Brice Koch, Burke Deters, Khristian Scheibe and Colton Buessing in the 4x800 meter relay and by Caleb Heiman in the 300 meter hurdles led the way for Axtell. Koch added a sixth place finish in the 800 meter run.

Clifton-Clyde Eagles had a State title captured as Kourtni Hubert won the girls javelin time for the second time posting a new State record toss of 141’06 and also took sixth in the shot put. Elizabeth Nobert picked up the other Eagle medal placing fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

Three medals were earned for Doniphan West as McKenzie Blevins placed fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the 100 meter dash, while Kody Collins took eighth in the 110 meter hurdles.

Frankfort also had three medals earned as Broderic Shirley took seventh in the 1600 and 3200 mete runs, while Sheldon Parthemer placed fifth in the pole vault.

Chase Carey for Blue Valley-Randolph picked up a pair of medals for the Rams taking sixth in the 1600 meter run and seventh in the 800 meter run.
