Doniphan West Volleyball Opens Season with Pair of Wins, Hosting Valley Heights & Wetmore

The high school volleyball season started on Tuesday for many teams across the State of Kansas it was a full slate of games for the Twin Valley League as all 13 teams were in action on Tuesday night. 

In Highland, Doniphan West hosted Valley Heights and Wetmore in League action on Tuesday night. At the end of the evening the Mustangs of Doniphan West were 2-0 with a pair of straight set wins, while Valley Heights wrapped up the night 1-1 and Wetmore started the season 0-2. 

To kick off the action Doniphan West took on the preseason tenth ranked team by the KVA in Class 1A-DI in Valley Heights and it was Doniphan West gaining the straight set win 25-19, 25-22. Set one started off with Doniphan West getting out to a quick 2-0 lead but the match was soon knotted up at 6-6 after Valley Heights strung four-straight points together with the serving of Kayla Smith. The teams trade points during the middle of set one with Valley Heights taking their first lead at 12-11 and holding a lead or being tied until Doniphan West took the lead back at 20-19. The 20th point for Doniphan West spring boarded a run of six-straight points for Doniphan West to close out set one for the 25-19 set win. Carlie Taylor had a pair of aces during the final six points, while Aubree Robinson added a pair of big blocks to help Doniphan West. Set two started off with two early kills from Taylor and Doniphan West lead early again. Behind the serving of Mia Scott the set two lead grew to 16-10 for Doniphan West and Valley Heights called a timeout. Doniphan West up by five late let Valley Heights string four-straight points together and get back into the set but a service error by Valley Heights ended the set and match as Doniphan West took set two 25-22 to earn the win. 

Looking to bounce back from the loss Valley Heights continued their night in the second match of the triangular on the night taking on Wetmore and it was Valley Heights earning the straight set win 25-8, 25-14. After a 1-1 start to set one Valley Heights rattled off four-straight points and ultimately worked to a 8-2 lead when Wetmore called an early timeout. Out of the timeout the Cardinals responded with four-straight points and drew just down 8-6, but Valley Heigts regained control and worked the lead to 10 at 17-7 and didn't look back, stringing seven straight points late in the set for the 25-8 set one win. Set two opened with Valley Heights working to a early 7-1 lead with Shelby Vermetten picking up the seventh tally on a kill. The lead grew for Valley Heights despite Wetmore putting together solid volleys and Gerae Haverkamp coming up with some kills. Emily Steenson had three aces late in set two and helped secure the set win at 25-14, as Valley Heights finished the night 1-1 to start the season. 

To wrap up the night Doniphan West squared off against Wetmore and it was Doniphan West finishing their night 2-0, after topping Wetmore in straight sets 28-26, 25-11. Early in set one Wetmore worked it to a tie at 9-9, as the Cardinals scored four-straight points behind the serving of Dakota McQueen. The Cardinals continued to string points together throughout the middle of set one adding to their lead; leading 17-12 at one juncture and during a nine point stretch of the match out-scoring Doniphan West 8-1 during that span. On the cusp of a set one win Wetmore had set point multiple times but Doniphan West fended it off four times and took a lead 25-24 and came from behind to take the set 28-26. Set two started with a quick start for Doniphan West the Mustangs galloped to the set and match win, putting a big cushion between them and Wetmore during the set to ultimately take it 25-11. Wetmore finished the night's action 0-2. 

 

The season rolls along in the Twin Valley League on Tuesday, September with another full slate of TVL matchups.
