Axtell Tops Troy and Wetmore in Volleyball Action

Week three of the volleyball season rolled along on Tuesday night and in the Twin Valley League the Troy Trojans hosted the Axtell Eagles and Wetmore Cardinals for a triangular. 

The evening started off with Axtell taking on Troy and the Eagles picked up the win in a tough straight set contest, 25-21, 25-23. Axtell put three points together early and led 4-1 but Troy bounced back and behind a Holly Whetstine ace the Trojans grabbed a 6-5 lead in set one. The Eagles responded with a 5-0 run to work to a 10-7 advantage when Troy called a timeout. The team’s traded points midway through the set until Troy regained the lead at 17-16 and pushed it out to 19-16 once again behind the serving of Whetstine. Axtell tied the contest and went on a 5-0 run during that time to take the lead back at 21-19. The Eagles held of Troy down the stretch of set one and a ace by Bradie Schimtz helped Axtell secure the set one win, 25-21. In set two Troy took the early advantage using seven consecutive points to lead 9-2, as Blair Weishaar led the charge with her serving, including a pair of aces. The Trojan led started to evaportate as Axtell drew with three at 15-12 when Troy called a timeout. out of the timeout the Eagles continued their run and strung 10-straight together to take a 16-15 lead. Troy regained the lead late in set two at 21-18 but Axtell continue to fight back and behind a Kiersten Talbot block earned set and match point for the set two win, 25-23 and the match victory. 

Axtell Eagles made it a 2-0 night for themselves when they took on the Wetmore Cardinals in the second matchup of the night and Axtell picked up the straight set win, 25-15, 25-3. The Eagles flew out to a quick 6-0 lead in set one and extend that lead to 11-0 before Wetmore got on the board, Talbot lead the way for Axtell with the serving duties during the run. Taylor Feldkamp added an ace to give Axtell the 16-7 advantage as they went on to earn the set one win on a Patricia Heiman kill, 25-15. Wetmore earned the first point of set two but Axtell went on another run and got up 8-1 when Wetmore called a timeout. Maddy Kuckelman took on the serving duties midway through the set and posted four aces for the Eagles and Emily Ronnebaum had the set and match point in set two to give Axtell the 25-3 win. Gerae Haverkamp led the young Cardinals coming up with multiple kills in the contest. 

To finish off the night the host Troy took on Wetmore and the Trojans earned the straight set win 25-11, 25-18. Set one started off with Lexi Norris leveling an ace for the Trojans and that set the tone of the set as Troy worked to a 12-5 advantage. Wetmore mid-way through the set strung two-points together to make it 15-8 Troy, forcing a Trojan timeout. The Trojans went on to win set one 25-11 on a Wetmore let serve. In set two Wetmore established an early 6-3 lead but Troy tied the match at 6-6 and Troy then worked out to a 16-10 lead, while Norris posted multiple aces again in the second set to help Troy win the set 25-18. 

With the 2-0 night Axtell improved to 9-3 and 6-0 in TVL action as only the contest with Wetmore counted as a League matchup. For Troy the 1-1 night puts them at 5-5 overall on the year and 3-4 in League play, while Wetmore with the pair of losses falls to 1-10 and 0-5 in TVL action.
