Jeff County North Takes Battle of the Chargers
By Jonny Kane

The Jefferson County North Chargers racked up over 500 yards of total offense as they picked up victory number two on the season with a 40-20 win over Horton Friday night.

JCN received the opening kick of the ballgame and wasted no time finding the end zone as senior quarterback Bryce Noll scampered in from five yards out for the first points of the contest. Noll connected with senior receiver Cole Bryant on the two-point conversion and JCN led 8-0 with 10:16 left in the first quarter.

JCN forced a punt on the ensuing Horton possession and just three plays after Jeff North received the kick, Noll connected with senior receiver Brayden Summers on a 53-yard strike to give JCN a two score lead. The two-point conversion try failed, and Jeff North led 14-0 with 7:14 left in the opening frame.

On the next Horton possession the JCN defense stood tough once again and forced a punt. Noll capitalized on the three-and-out and accounted for his third score of the game, this time a 55-yard run, giving JCN a 20-0 lead.

Horton finally was able to sustain a drive to get on the scoreboard as senior running back Conner Dean found the end zone from 10 yards out as the first quarter ended to make it a two score game, 20-6.

The JCN Chargers came right back and didn’t allow Horton to keep the momentum as Noll scored on a one-yard run with 10:15 remaining in the first half to make it a 26-6 JCN lead after the conversion was unsuccessful.

After the two teams traded possessions Horton got something going for the second time of the night and the drive was capped off by a Dean two-yard touchdown rush to make it 26-12, JCN.

On the ensuing JCN possession Noll made his first and only mistake of the night as he was picked off by junior Cameron Smith giving Horton the football back with 90 second left in the half. After two plays Smith connected with junior receiver Christian White for a 40-yard touchdown making it a one score game going into halftime, 26-18.

At this point Horton had all of the momentum coming out of the break as they started with the ball to begin the third quarter, but JCN took all of the momentum right back as sophomore corner Ridge Robertson picked off a White pass and ran it back 45 yards for the pick-six. The try failed, and JCN led 34-20 with 10:30 left in the third quarter.

JCN tacked on one more score on a Robertson 20-yard run as both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The Jefferson County North Chargers racked up 508 yards of total offense as Robertson led the way on the ground with 17 carries for 143 yards and a score. Noll had 295 yards of total offense – 16 carries for 119 yards, three touchdowns, while completing seven of his 14 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown.

Horton’s Smith was 21-for-26 passing for 239 yards and one score.

JCN (2-2) has a non-league matchup with Troy next Friday, while Horton (0-4) is at Pleasant Ridge.
