Ready, set and go and the runners were off yesterday at the Sabetha cross country Invitational as many area teams competed against each other with a few other teams involved, also.

Multiple area teams competed on the day but it was a non-area school claiming the top spots on the day as Baldwin won both the girls and boys team titles and had the Top three individual runners in each race. Hiawatha had the best area team showing as the Red Hawk girls snatched up a second place behind five gals finishing in the Top 17. ACCHS was the only other area girls’ team to field a full team and they finished fifth out of five teams.

In the boys race Hiawatha also grabbed the top area team showing as they finished third, while the host Sabetha took fourth out of 12 teams. Jackson Heights finished sixth as a team, while Riverside took seventh, Wetmore eighth, Marysville tenth, Jeff West 11th and Nemaha Central 12th.

Seven Top 20 finishes were garnered in all by the Hiawatha Red Hawks at the Sabetha Invitational, including a pair of Top five finishes in the boy’s race. Gavin Lierz and Brandt Houk brought home fourth and fifth place finishes in the boys contest after posting times of 17:23 and 17:24. In the girl’s action, Elizabeth Kettler once again led Hiawatha as she finished sixth with a time of 21:22, while Aly Shamburg and Emma Williams claimed 12th and 13th place performances. Kailey Davis and Molly Kettler rounded out the Red Hawks team score with Top 20 finishes placing 16th and 17th, respectively.

Jackson Heights freshman, Faith Little had the best area girls performance as she finished fourth placed with a time of 21:07. The best boys finish for the Cobras came from Dalton Chartier as he placed 24th.

Sabetha was led by an eighth place finish from Keegan Cox as he posted a time of 17:30 to earn eighth place. Megan Meyer had the lone Top 20 finish for the lady Bluejays as she finished 11th, while Emily Strathman finished just outside of the Top 20 at 22nd and Braden Cox grabbed 23rd in the boys race.

A pair of Top 20 finishes led the Riverside boys as Cole Hinton raced to time of 17:25 to claim sixth place and Tristan Hinton notched a 15th place performance.

Aaron Achten led the Wetmore Cardinals again this year as he ran to a time of 17:31 to earn a ninth place finish, while Chanler Morfitt finished 28th for the Cardinals.

ACCHS Tigers had one Top 20 finish on the day and it was Beba Scholz who grabbed a seventh place finish with a time of 21:25, while Mackenzie Forbes finished just outside the Top 20 at 21st.

Holton, Marysville, Jeff West, Nemaha Central and Horton also competed at the Sabetha Invitational but did not have Top 20 finishers on the day.

Alexis Garica picked up the top Holton finishes as she raced to a 23rd place finish, while a 39th place finish in the girls race by Makenzie Tucker for Jeff West was best showing. Marysville was led by a 21st place by Skylar Widmer in the boy’s race, while Nemaha Central was led by a 48th place by Jordan Peterson. Horton had two runners compete on the day as Jordan Galietti and Gavin Chriss competed.
