Sabetha & Marysville Girls Tennis Each Have a Seventh Place Finisher at State

The first State competition took place this past Friday and Saturday in high school sports in Kansas as the girls tennis championships were in action. 

Both Sabetha and Marysville qualified multiple athletes for State and at the end of the competition it was a pair of seventh place performances that highlighted State for the area, as Sabetha and Marysville each had a seventh place performer. 

Leading the charge for the Bluejays was Lexi Wenger who earned seventh place in singles action. Wenger opened up State with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the opening round but fell out of the winner's bracket in her next contest falling 6-0, 6-0 to the gal who eventually took third. Lexi responded out of the loss to rattle off wins of 9-1, 9-1 and 9-5 consecutively, but fell 9-1 before being able to get to the fifth place match. That second loss put Wenger in the seventh place match were she earned a 9-2 victory to finish State 5-2 and earn seventh place. 

The Bluejay tandem of Jena Winkler and Nicole Brey posted a 2-2 record at State in doubles action as they won their opening round contest 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), but fell in the next round 6-3, 6-1 and in the loser's bracket would win one match 9-5, but fall in the next 9-5 to finish their State tournament. Savanna Metzger and Laura Edelman also competed at State for Sabetha and went 1-2 in competition, falling 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round, but responding with a 9-8 (7-4) win in the loser's bracket before falling 9-6 to finish their State tournament. 

Marysville Bulldogs were led by the doubles tandem of Shelby Downard and Madison Neiberding who notched a seventh place finish at State behind a 4-2 record. After a first round bye Downard and Neiberding would open action at State for themselves with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 tough loss, but responded to win the next three matches 9-2, 9-6 and 9-0 and were on the cusp of the fifth place match but fell 9-7 pushing them into the seventh place match. In the seventh place contest the tandem notched a 9-4 game and earned the win. 

The Bulldog team of Holly Holthaus and Avery Williams were also in action at State and finished the State competition with an 0-2 record. Holthaus and Williams lost their opening round match 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 and in the first game in the loser's bracket took on teammates Downard and Neiberding falling 9-2. 

In singles action Rachel Freese competed for the Bulldogs and finished the State tournament going 1-2, as she fell 6-2, 6-4 in her first match, which was the second round of the winner's bracket, won 9-3 in the loser's bracket to stay alive before falling in the next match to finish her State tournament.
