Sabetha Runs Past Centralia in 3A Playoff Opener

In a battle of 5-4 teams that hadn't played each other in football in more than 50 years, the Sabetha Bluejays dominated the 3A Bi-District contest racking up 375 yards rushing while holding Centralia to just 129. 

Making their 8th straight post season appearance, the Bluejays went three-and-out to start the game, but then scored on their next six possessions.  Sabetha led 21-0 at halftime on touchdown runs by Trae Snyder (1 yard), Brandon Poe (19 yards) and Brock Frey (4 yards) while marching downfield quickly on 80, 92 and 38 yard drives.  Poe found Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Player to Bank On" Calder Keehn on a 37 yard passing touchdown in the third quarter, which was the Jays only completed pass of the night.  Zach Edelman (27 yards) and Trei Harrell (5 yards) added rushing scores in the fourth quarter to make it 42-0 with 4:51 remaning.  

Sabetha ran 53 plays and picked up 23 first downs while averaging 7.5 yards per play.  The Jays had to take only six snaps on third down all night, and convereted their final five.  Brock Frey led the balanced rushing attack with 141  yards on 21 carries while Snyder added 10 carries for 84 yards and Poe finished with 70 yards rushing on 8 carries.  The Bluejays defensive line was dominante with senior, Kaid Allen helping lead a unit that made 15 stops for no gain or a loss.  Seniors Caleb Strahm and Denison State Bank Lineman of the game, Connor Epple (center) helped pave the way for the offense as Sabetha won their fourth game in a row and improved to 6-4 with a Regional rematch from last year at Silver Lake this Saturday at 7 PM.  

Centralia ended their 20th consecutive playoff season with a 5-5 record overall.  The Panthers had opportunities including a missed 38 yard field goal on their opening drive and also drove inside the Sabetha 25 yard line three other possessions, but was turned away on downs.  Centralia finisehd with 184 total yards led by senior, Jonathan Johnson who had 38 yards on 18 carries and Braden Deters who ran 17 times for 35 yards, including a five yard touchdown with 2:09 remaining to avoid a shutout.  Deters finished his senior campaign with 1,200 yards of total offense while Johnson ran for more than 1,400.
