Next spring the Sabetha Bluejays will have a baseball and softball team take flight for the first time as the school board passed the programs last night 6-1 after hearing a proposal on adding the sports.

Looking to improve participation numbers in activities a proposal was drawn up for Sabetha high school to add both baseball and softball starting in the spring of 2017 and that proposal passed Monday night. The Bluejays were looking to catch up with most Big Seven League schools in offering baseball and softball and most of the 3A schools in the State, also. With the addition of softball for Sabetha all Big Seven League schools now will offer softball and with Sabetha adding baseball all the Big Seven schools offer it now, expect Hiawatha. While 89% of 3A schools have softball and 81% offer baseball in the State.

A school conducted survey by Sabetha on spring sports participation showed that the number not out for sports would decrease by 50% if baseball and softball were offered by the school.

The push for the programs to be added to Sabetha high school comes with a great amount of community support and that starts with the fact that all costs for both the baseball and softball programs will be funded by donors from the community for a minimum of the first three years of the programs. The games will be played at Somerset park and the city fields already in place in Sabetha.

Starting the spring of 2017 Sabetha high school will officially offer baseball and softball programs and compete in the Big Seven League for action.
