GIRLS = Sabetha 57, Hiawatha 28

Both teams were anxious to play in the Roundhouse as Hiawatha played their first home games of the season and Sabetha looked to stay undefeated while getting comfortable in their 3A Sub-State venue.  The #2 ranked Lady Bluejays however scored the first 10 points of the game, including the first 5 from senior, Alexis McAfee, and Hiawatha turned the ball over on their initial six possessions and never recovered.  Sabetha's pressure defense forced 24 turnover and only allowed one made field goal outside of Emily Gartner's tough 21 point effort.  McAfee scored 6 of her 16 points in the final quarter as the Jays pushed the lead over 30 and forced a running clock in the final two minutes, before ultimately winning their fourth blowout of the campaign.  Emily Meyer added 13 points while Taryn Schuette added 9 and Jena Winkler chipped in 8 off the bench to push Sabetha to 5-0 overall. Hiawatha dropped to 2-2.

BOYS = Sabetha 41, Hiawatha 36

Sabetha used a 6-0 run to close out the first quarter and take a 11-7 lead before briefly going ahead 10 points at 19-9 in the second frame.  Yet, Hiawatha was within 22-16 at halftime and outscored the Jays to take the lead with 1:30 left in the third stanza as a trey by Alex Elfner gave the Hawks a 30-28 advantage into the final period.  The game was tied several times before Sabetha went ahead for good 36-34 on a pair of free throws by Brock Frey with 2:58 remaining.  The Bluejays were 16 of 30 at the foul stripe, including 7 of 13 in the last quarter, while Hiawatha was just 4 of 7 at the line in the game.  Joseph Kunkel scored a game high 16 points for the Redhawks who dropped to 0-4 and Frey led the Jays (5-0) with 10 points.  He hit two three-pointers in the first quarter, but Sabetha did not make any outside shots in the final 25 minutes of the contest and struggled at times against the 3-2 zone.  Jonah Montgomery, Caleb Strahm and Alec Kirwan all added seven points and Calder Keehn posted four of his six in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.
