(KLZA)-- The Falls City Sacred Heart girls basketball team is off to a 6-0 start and were ranked either first or second in the Class D2 pre-season polls, depending on which newspaper you read.

Saturday (12/19) Maggie Goltz led the Irish to their 6th win and second in less than 24 hours by scoring 20 points against St. Joseph LeBlond. During the game Goltz, a 6’1”, senior surpassed the 1,000 point mark in her high school career.

Goltz has started since her freshman year and has been a key component in winning back-to-back third place trophies at state in 2013 and 2014 and the State Title in D2 in 2015. In 9 state tournament games she holds the Sacred Heart record for points at state averaging better than 13.5 per game.

A versatile athlete who has played every offensive position for Sacred Heart Coach Luke Santo, Goltz is playing point guard in her senior season. Goltz has demonstrated the ability to score in the post, in the mid-range and from behind the three point line in her career.

Goltz is currently 10th on the Girls scoring chart with 1,009 points and continues to climb in the record books where she is in the top 10 in 3 point shots made, blocked shots, rebounds and free throws made.

Goltz has been hampered in the past with lower leg issues but so far this year is able to compete longer without having to sit out. One of just two seniors on this years squad the Irish are attempting to get better each game and hope to make a run at another state title in March.

All that said, don’t get the idea the Irish are a one-person team. Goltz will be the first to tell you she could not get it done alone.  The Irish have one of the tallest squads in the state this year with four players at 6- foot or taller and three more at 5’10” or taller.
