Frankfort Falls To Wabaunsee In Pair of Games Heading Into Holiday Break

While most teams had saw their first part of the high school basketball season come to an end and holiday break had started but not the Frankfort Wildcats as they took to the court on Tuesday in non-league action against Wabaunsee. It was a pair of tough contests but Wabaunsee was able to notch the road wins as the lady Chargers won 48-44 over Frankfort and a strong second half pushed the Wabaunsee boys to the win over Frankfort 68-31. 

The night started off with a game that was tight from wire to wire between the lady Wildcats and Chargers. Frankfort held the 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Wabaunsee would respond with a 5-0 run to start the second quarter to snatch the lead and go up 19-15. The Wildcats responded in the second frame led by a pair of three-pointers from Rebecca Adams and Kyla Hardwick and regained the lead to hold the 27-21 advantage at the half. 

Third quarter started exactly the same way the second did with a Wabaunsee run this time a 7-0 run to give them the 28-27 lead of the Wildcats in the third. Frankfort responded yet again and retook took the lead once more pushing back to a six-point margin at 38-32 headed into the fourth quarter. The fourth was back and forth between both teams and Wabaunsee continued to hang around and snuck ahead at 44-43 with around three minutes left in the game and ultimately would not give the lead back. Frankfort down the stretch had opportunities to regain the lead or tie the game but missed misfired on shots and fell 48-44.

The win pushed Wabaunsee to 5-0 on the season and they were led by Alli Terrapin who scored 16 points, while Karsen Schultz added 14 and Taylor Nikkel tallied 10. 

Frankfort in the loss fell to 2-4 on the year and was led by Hardwick in the game as she scored a season high 16 points, earning her "Community National Bank" Player to Bank On honors on KMZA. Adams chipped in nine points, hitting three three-pointers in the contest. 

It was a tale of two halves in the boy's affair on the night as Wabaunsee worked to a 14-7 lead and it was 17-11 after one quarter. Frankfort chipped at the lead in the second making it a 17-15 game early in the second quarter but a 5-0 run by Wabaunsee pushed their lead back out and they carried a 27-22 lead into halftime. The Wildcats hung tough in the first half led by a seven point first quarter by Whalen Kokoruda. 

Wabaunsee came charging out of the gates in the third quarter and didn't look back as they worked to a 36-24 lead when Frankfort called a timeout to try to stop their momentum, but Wabaunsee would go on to post a 22-5 third quarter to lead 49-27 after three. Things continued to click in the fourth and the Chargers grabbed the 68-31 win. 

The win pushes Wabaunsee to 4-1 on the season and a trio of guys in double figures led them on the night as Cooper Imthurn and Mitchell Wertzberger each posted 15 points and Reed Murray added 14 points. 

Frankfort with the loss falls to 1-4 on the season and was led by Ryan Kraushaar in the contest has he posted eight points, earning him "Community National Bank" Player to Bank On honors on KMZA. 

The basketball season will pick back up for Frankfort on Tuesday, January 5th as they get back to Twin Valley League action and travel to Clifton-Clyde.
