Top 5 Kanzaland Sports Moments of 2015 - Top 5's in Different Sports

The year of 2015 has been one to remember for the Kanzaland area with high school teams from the KNZA/KMZA/KAIR radio listening area performing well in multiple sports. Below we take a look at the Top 5 2015 moments in the sports of football, basketball, wrestling, track and field, cross country and an other sports category for the remaining sports for area schools. 
 
Top 5 Categories include – High school football, High school basketball, High School wrestling, High School track and field, High School cross country and High School Other Sports (volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and etc.)
 
Top 5 Kanzaland Sports Moments 
Football – 
1. Troy Trojans post best finish in school history in football finishing as 2-1A State Runner-ups, posting a 10-2 record. 
 
2. Holton Wildcats finish season strong to make a push to 4A-DII State title game and finish year State Runner-up with a 9-4 record. 

3. Hanover Wildcats for second straight year finish as 8-Man Division I State Runner-up, posting a 12-1 record. 

4. Axtell Eagles return to Sub-State round (final four) in 8-Man Division II for second straight year and finish with a 10-2 record. 

5. Streaks come to an end as Centralia’s TVL win streak of 28-straight was snapped by Troy & Nemaha Central snaps Holton’s Big Seven win streak of 48-straight games. (Nemaha Central also finished year 10-1 and won the Big Seven League) 

Basketball – 
1. Hanover and Doniphan West boys duke it out for State title in Class 1A-Division I with the Wildcats claiming the State title (5th in school history), while Doniphan West in their first trip to State finished as State Runner-up.  (Hanover finished 25-1 & Doniphan West finished 19-8) 
 
2. Centralia girls notch State Runner-up finish in Class 1A-Division I falling to a tough Hoxie team, earning the Panthers their best finish since 2007. (Centralia finished 21-5) 
 
3. Sabetha Bluejay boys and girls fly home with third and fourth place finishes in Class 3A, respectively. Both teams also won Big Seven League titles during the year. (Sabetha boys finished 24-2 & girls finished 21-5)
 
4. Valley Falls girls earn fourth place finish in Class 2A at State after winning NEKL with a perfect 16-0 record during regular season. (Valley Falls finished 22-4) 
 
5. Washington County boys posted best finish at State since 2011 and were in the 2A tournament for the second straight year taking fourth this year. (Washington County finished 21-5) 
 
Wrestling – 
1. Tristan Speer of Troy finishes high school career by repeating as 3-2-1A State champion at 195lbs going undefeated on the season. 
 
2. Lucas Lovvorn of Holton for second straight year wins a State title in 4A this year at 160lbs, helping Holton Wildcats finish third as a team at State. 
 
3. Holton Wildcats follow up back-to-back 4A State titles with a third place team finish at State led by five Top five finishers. 
 
4. ACCHS Tiger sophomore, Hunter Ostertag caps off strong season with 3-2-1A State title at 120lbs.
 
5. Marysville Bulldog, Josh Nelsen closes out his high school career on the mats by winning the 3-2-1A State title at 170lbs. 

Cross Country – 
1. Axtell Eagle junior runner, Burke Deters after winning the Regional title wins the Class 1A State title to cap off his year. 
 
2. Centralia girls team takes second with only four runners competing, missing out on the Class 1A State title by only five points. Sadie Jones led the Panthers with a fourth place finishes, while the other runners finished 15th, 31st and 40th. 
 
3. Hiawatha girls team finished second in Class 3A only eight points off a State title. Elizabeth Kettler led the Red Hawks finishing fifth while the rest of the lady Red Hawks finished 24th, 33rd, 38th, 44th, 64th and 73rd. 
 
4. Frankfort boys team finished second in Class 1A, missing out of a State title by just 10 points. Colton Parthemer led the Wildcats finishing 12th, while his teammates finished 13th, 27th, 37th, 48th, 63rd and 72nd. 
 
5. Atchison girls take fourth place in Class 4A, led by a third place finish third place finish from Sarah Jaloma, while her teammates finished 24th, 33rd, 40th, 53rd, 56th and 87th. 
 
HM – Pleasant Ridge boys take fifth as team in Class 3A, led by Luke Oatney who finished second place, while his teammates finished 39th, 44th, 62nd, 63rd, 77th and 78th. 
 
Track – 
1. Hanover boys win Class 1A State track title led by four State titles and 10 overall Top eight finishes. Wildcat relay teams swept the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 titles setting new records in the 100 and 400 races, while Preston Jueneman won the 400m. 
 
2. Linn girls win Class 1A State title led by one State title and eight overall eight Top four finishes. The lady Bulldogs 4x100 relay team won the State title for second straight year to lead the Bulldog performers. 
 
3. Valley Heights boys and girls both finish second in 1A as teams at State. The boys had eight Top eight finishes led by four State titles from Elijah Smith who won the 110m and 300m hurdles, along with the long jump and triple jump, setting a new State record in the triple jump. The Mustang girls were led by seven Top eight finishes, including a pair of State titles as Kayla Smith won both the long and triple jump and a State title for Sidney Blackburn who won the discus.
 
4. Nemaha Central boys and girls take third and fourth, respectively as team in Class 3A at State track. The Thunder boys were led by Jacob Koelzer who won the long jump, while they had a total of eight Top eight finishes. The lady Thunder had seven top eight finishes led by Shaylyn Stallbaumer who won the javelin.
 
5. Total of 21 State titles won between 3A, 2A and 1A for Kanzaland area athletes at State track – 3A: Megan Garrett (Sabetha – high jump), Emily Gartner (Hiawatha – discus), Josef Smith (Marysville – 1600m), Andrae McGaughy (Riverside – 300m) & Nemaha Central athletes listed above; 2A: Dylan Hodgson (Washington County – 3200m), Erin Alexander (Washington County – shot put); 1A: Kourtni Hubert (Clifton-Clyde – javelin), Bradie Schmitz (Axtell – 400m), Darrian Turner (Centralia – 200m) & athletes from Hanover, Linn and Valley Heights listed above. 
 
Other sports – (volleyball, softball, tennis, golf, baseball) 
1. Jeff West softball team claim 4A-Division II State title in walk-off fashion with RBI single by Emily Brown. Tigers improved upon from their third place State finish from the previous year. (Jeff West finished 20-4)
 
2. Centralia Panthers & Axtell Eagles each finish as State Runner-ups in volleyball in 1A-DI and DII, respectively. Centralia posted another stellar season finishing as 1A-Division I State Runner-Up, while winning the Twin Valley League regular season and tournament titles. (Centralia finished 42-2) Axtell Eagles returned to the 1A-Division II State tournament and after finishing third place the previous year, earned a State Runner-up performance this year. (Axtell finished 32-11) 
 
3. Immaculata boys win Class 1A State golf title lead by an individual State title for Dawson Schroeder who carded a round of 75. 
 
4. Centralia boy’s golf takes third in Class 1A at State a year after winning a State title; four Top 22 performances led Centralia. 
 
5. McLouth softball team finishes season strong claiming third place finish in Class 2-1A State tournament. (McLouth finished 21-5) 
 
HM - A pair of seventh place performances by area girls tennis players highlight 3-2-1A State girls tennis tournament for area competitors. Lexi Wenger of Sabetha finished seventh in singles competition, while the Marysville tandem of Shelby Downard and Madison Niebedring took seventh in doubles action.
