3-2-1A Regional Wrestling Sees 33 Area Wrestlers Qualify for State

Class 3-2-1A high school wrestling Regionals took place on Friday and Saturday and 32 area grapplers earned a trip to the State tournament in Hays.

One area school claimed a Regional Championship that was the Marysville Bulldogs who ranks fourth as a team in Class 3-2-1A as they won the Beloit Regional wrestling title. Marysville was the only local area team competing at the Beloit Regional and posted 180.5 points to win the Regional crown by 68.5 points with 10 wrestler’s qualifying for State. A trio of individual Regional titles led Marysville as Ethan Crownover (120lbs), Chris Deters (132lbs) and Jacob Mintzmyer (170lbs) all picked up first place finishes at Regionals. Crownover went 3-0 at 120lbs with two pinfall wins (1:27 & 3:00) and major decision win (15-1) and improved to 24-14 on the year. Deters the number ranked guy at 132lbs in 3-2-1A posted a 4-0 day with pinfall wins in :49 & :56, a injury default win and 2-0 decision win to move to 39-1 this year. While, Mintzmyer won 170lbs after a 4-0 day with three pinfall wins (:52, 3:24 & 2:43) and a major decision win (13-0) moving to 38-1 on the year. 

The seven other Marysville grapplers to qualify for State all placed fourth in their weight classes as Jakob Snellings (106lbs), Chane Hight (113lbs), Skylar Widmer (126lbs), Jacob Stryker (160lbs), Nick Ackerman (182lbs), Caleb Vogelsberg (195lbs) and Tristian Detimore (220lbs) all registered fourth place performances. Snellings, Hight, Widmer and Stryker all went 2-2 at Regionals and are 19-18, 20-18, 28-13 and 35-4 on the year, respectively. Ackerman, Vogelsberg and Detimore all notched 3-2 days on the mats at Regionals and are 32-10, 27-15 and 29-16, respectively on the year. 

Every other area school with wrestlers competed at the Rossville 3-2-1A Regional over the weekend and nine of those schools have at least one wrestler head to State in Hays. 

Royal Valley Panthers had the best area team showing take third place out of 20-plus schools with competitors on the day. Six grapplers are headed to State for Royal Valley after Top four finishes at Regionals. Dalton Ware (106lbs) and Lance Bailey (120lbs) each led the Panthers on the day notching second place finishes behind 3-1 days on the mats, improving to 37-7 and 33-7 records this year, respectively. The four other State qualifers all finished third for the Panthers as Zack Lux (138lbs), Noah Hart (152lbs), Jacob Box (182lbs) and Charles Todd (285lbs) each brought home the bronze. Lux notched a 5-1 day at 138lbs to take third and is 36-12 on the year, while Hart went 4-1 at Regionals at 152lbs to move to 40-5 on the year and take third. Box and Todd both went 3-1 at 182lbs and 285lbs, respectively to take third and move to 41-4 and 25-4 on the season. 

Sabetha Bluejays took fifth as a team at Regionals had have three State qualifiers with all three having Top three finishes. Cauy Rokey led the Bluejays taking second place at 170lbs going 2-1 in action and is 21-14 on the year. Both Seth Harrell (126lbs) and Brandon Brownlee (132lbs) registered third place finishes to qualify for State after going 2-1 and 4-1, respectively on the mats at Regionals. Harrell carries a 30-5 record going into State, while Brownlee is 28-13 this year. 

It was eighth place as a team for Doniphan West at Regionals and the Mustangs have a trio of grapplers headed to Hays. Kody Collins was one of only two area wrestlers to win a Regional title at the Rossville Regional as Collins won the 195lbs weight class going 4-0 with three pinfall wins (:40, 1:37 & 3:06) and a 7-0 decision win, putting him at 31-5 this year. Garret Dunlap (160lbs) and Zeb Speer (152lbs) are both headed to State for the Mustangs, also. Dunlap took third at 160lbs going 3-1 on the day to move to 34-3 on the season, while Speer took fourth at 152lbs after going 3-2 moving to 24-12 on the year. 

Both Pleasant Ridge and Onaga had a trio of wrestlers qualify for State in 3-2-1A at Rossville. Pleasant Ridge was led by Nick Stiver who won the Regional title at 285lbs going 3-0 with two pinfall wins in :51 and 3:09, while winning by 6-5 decision also, moving to 11-2 on the year. Dustin Graham (195lbs) and Trevor Ragland (106lbs) both picked up fourth place finishes for the Rams to earn spots at State. Both guys posted 2-2 records at Regionals, while Graham is now 27-6 on the year and Ragland is 20-8 on the season. Onaga was led by Quentin Lara who earned a silver medal at 220lbs going 2-1 and moving to 32-7 this year, whlie Garret Ames (170lbs) and Eli Zidek (285lbs) each earned a fourth place finish for the Buffaloes. Ames finished 3-2 at Regionals and Zidek went 2-2, while the guys improved to 27-7 and 27-14 on the year. 

Two Riverside Cyclones are headed to State as both Scott Resler (138lbs) and Donovan Duncan (195lbs) qualified for State. Resler took second at 138lbs with a 3-1 mark at Regionals and improved to 3-1 on the season, while Duncan placed third at 195lbs after a 3-1 day, moving to 31-12 on the year. 

ACCHS, Hiawatha and Perry Lecompton each will have one wrestler making the trip to Hays after a Top four finish at Regionals. For ACCHS its Hunter Ostertag going to State after finishing second at 132lbs going 2-1 at Regionals and heads to State with a 28-6 record. Kennan Hinton of Hiawatha placed third at 220lbs to earn a spot at State going 4-1 at Regionals and improving to 22-6 on the year. While for Perry Lecompton Wyatt Pringle earned fourth place finish at 113lbs to earn a spot at State after a 2-2 day at Regionals moving to 22-11 on the year. 

Area State qualifying wrestlers will hit the mats for the 3-2-1A State tournament in Hays at Fort Hays State University next Friday, February 26th and Saturday, February 27th.
