Wetmore Girls & Onaga Boys Claim TVL Wins on the Hardwood

The Wetmore Cardinals flew into Onaga to take on the Buffaloes on Tuesday in Twin Valley League high school basketball action on Tuesday and it was a spilt for the Cardinals and Buffaloes on the evening. Wetmore Cardinal girl’s flew out early to a lead going on for the 48-21 win, while the Buffalo boys made plays down the stretch to secure the 53-47 win. 

Flying out to a 9-0 lead to start the game the Wetmore Cardinals put Onaga behind early and worked to a 16-3 lead after the first quarter and added to their lead over the course of the game with a 16-6 second quarter and 12-5 third quarter. Onaga struggled to get back in the game while Wetmore continued to stretch out the lead ultimately winning 48-21. Jill Henry got Wetmore rolling early with 11 of her 12 points in the first half and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. While, Gerae Haverkamp stepped up in the second half and posted an 11 point third quarter for Wetmore and finished with 20 points and McKayla Henry chipped in nine points. 

The Wetmore Cardinals with the win improved to 9-12 on the season and wrap up the regular season on a three-game winning streak, while finishing 4-8 in TVL play. Onaga with the loss falls to 1-18 on the year and is 0-11 in the TVL. The Buffaloes were led by Shay Duer who scored seven points on the night all coming in the second half. 

The boys varsity matchup was back and forth down to the wire with Onaga holding on for the win making a few free throws late to secure the 53-47 win at home over Wetmore. The Cardinals held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter of action and lead most of the first frame, but Onaga took the lead in the second quarter and carried a 26-21 lead into halftime behind a 16-10 second quarter. The lead grew to eight for the Buffaloes in the second half but Wetmore pushed back and took a 34-33 lead with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter but Onaga got the final points of the quarter to lead 35-34 after three. In the fourth it was a see-saw affair with both teams trading the lead down to the final minute of the game when Onaga pushed the lead to four and Wetmore hoisted up several three-point opportunities with the clock winding down but couldn't connect and the Buffaloes hit a few more free throws to seal the win. 

Onaga finished the night 14-17 from the free throw line as a team and moved to 8-11 on the season with the win and 5-6 in the TVL as Jace Fischer paced the Buffaloes with a season-high 16 points earning him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Jackson Glessner chipped in nine points and Tanner Marten finished with eight points, as all nine guys that played for the Buffaloes scored at least two points in the game. 

Wetmore with the loss fell to 3-17 on the season and 1-11 in the TVL with Trey Craig and Dakota McKinney leading the team in the loss. Craig recorded double figures for the sixth straight game posting 17 points, while McKinney hit four three's and finished with 16 points. 

Onaga will wrap up the regular season on Thursday night as they will host Centralia, while Wetmore has finsihed up the regular season and will turn their attention to Sub-State action at Hartford next week.
