Marysville & Holton Headline 11 Area Wrestlers Placing at State

For one final time of the season wrestlers from across Kansas took to the mats this time on the grandest stage at the State tournament. Forty four area wrestlers hit the mats one final time this season at the Class 4A and 3-2-1A State tournaments last Friday and Saturday and 11 finished with Top five finishes. 

Marysville Bulldogs who qualified 10 grapplers for the 3-2-1A State tournament tallied a third place team finish at State the best in school history. The Bulldogs were led by a pair of State Champs as both Chris Deters and Jacob Mintzmyer secured State titles. Deters who came into State ranked number one at 132lbs with only one loss on the season and finishes the year 43-1 after a 4-0 State tournament winning the 132lbs State title. Deters opened the State tourney with a pinfall win in 1:25 and then won by 6-3 decision to get to the Semifinals. In the Semi's Deters notched an 8-0 major decision win and in the Championship bout won by pinfall in 1:46. Mintzmyer also came into the State tourney ranked in his weight class ranked third at 170lbs and after a 4-0 State tournament finishes the year 42-1 and State Champ. Jacob opened up State with back-to-back pinfall wins in 3:47 and 2:49 to make the Semifinals where he recorded a 12-6 decision win and won the Championship bout by 7-1 decision. Skyler Widmer also placed for the Bulldogs claiming fifth place at 126lbs notching a 4-2 record at State. Two other Marysville wrestlers picked up a pair of wins and another grabbed one win to help the Bulldogs take third as a team at State. 

The Holton Wildcats had the second best overall team showing at State for area schools with wrestlers at State as Holton finished tied for tenth in Class 4A. Two second place finishes led the Wildcats at State as both Justin Rieschick and Tyler Price took second place at 145lbs and 152lbs, respectively. Rieschick wraps up his high school wrestling career earning a medal in all four years of his career going out with a second place at 145lbs after a 3-1 record at State. While Price improved upon his fourth place finish at State last year grabbing second place this year at 152lbs as a junior going 3-1 on the mats at State. Justin Pool finished out his Holton Wildcat wrestling career placing fifth at 138lbs posting a 4-2 record at State. 

Doniphan West Mustang, Kody Collins capped his wrestling career in a strong way placing second at 195lbs at State after going 3-1, losing in a tough way in the Championship bout to finish second. 

Two Royal Valley Panthers brought home medals at State in Class 3-2-1A as Charles Todd took third at 285lbs and Dalton Ware placed fifth at 106lbs. Todd lost his first match at State only to respond and win four straight matches and finish 4-1 at State on the mats to take third at 285lbs, while Ware notched a 3-2 mark at State placing fifth at 106lbs. 

ACCHS Tigers and Onaga Buffaloes each had a fifth place finisher at the 3-2-1A State tournament as Hunter Ostertag took fifth at 132lbs by going 4-2 at State, while Quentin Lara notched a 3-2 record at State at 220lbs to grab that fifth place finish. 

Once again it was plenty of great performances at the State wrestling tournament and multiple area grapplers performed strong at State.
