The action in the Class 1A-Division I Sub-State at Onaga got rolling on Tuesday night with a pair of first round games and they proved to be quite interesting and some tough wins for the Doniphan West girls and Frankfort boys. Doniphan West girls opened the night with a hard-nosed 46-33 win over Onaga, while Frankfort picked up the 53-51 win against Immaculata using a game winning shot with two seconds left.

It was a slow start to the night as the girls contest started off with back-to-back turnovers by Onaga and Doniphan West and throughout the night both teams had their fair share struggles from turnovers, fouls, missed layups but each team had strong points, too makes runs at each other. Doniphan West by the end of the first quarter doubled up Onaga 12-6 and in the second quarter the offense went stagnate for a while on both side but the Mustangs added to their lead with a 6-1 frame and led 18-7 at the half. The second half was far more balanced between the teams as Onaga fought back into the game getting to within five points several times with great energy but Doniphan West made a few free throws and partnered with some shots secured the 46-33 win.

The Buffaloes had some opportunities to get closer in the game but misfired on some free throws and Doniphan West kept them at bay as Onaga finished out their season with a 1-20 record led by Shay Duer who scored 10 points.

Doniphan West was led Kenzie Blevins who scored 14 points and she didn't play most of the fourth quarter going out with an injury, but did return in the fourth and had a big old-fashion three-point play to help the Mustangs move to 7-13 on the year. With her game high 14 and grit showed by coming back in with an injury Blevins earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Eight other Mustangs also scored on the night with Mia Scott, Kirsten Huss and Carlie Taylor each contributing seven points.

The win puts Doniphan West into the 1A-DI Onaga Sub-State Semifinals against Centralia on Friday night, while Frankfort will take on Immaculata in the other half of the Semifinals. (Both games will be on 92.1 KMZA & MSCSports.net)

The second game of the night pitted a pair of six wins teams against each other and it proved to be a duel going down to the final seconds in the contest. After a slow start for both teams to the game it was 13-6 after the first quarter with Frankfort in front and the Wildcats led most of the first half until Immaucalata took a 18-17 lead with 2:14 left in the first half. The teams traded points in the final two minutes of the first half and went into halftime tied at 23-23. Frankfort regained slight control in the third up 36-32 headed into the final frame but the lead traded hands multiple times in the fourth and in the final minute of the contest Immaculata worked the offense to tie the game at 51-51 with about 15 seconds remaining. Out of a timeout Frankfort look to claim the win with the final shot and Brendan Levi went one-on-one with his defender and from just inside the free throw knocked down the jumper with two seconds remaining to give the Wildcats the win 53-51 as Immaculata's three-quarter court shot went wide left.

The loss ends Immaculata's season with a 6-15 record as the Raiders were led by a season-high 19 points, from Jared Thibault, while Zach Schwinn scored 10 points and Justin Varney posted 9 points.

Frankfort with the win moved to 7-15 on the year and was led by Ryan Kraushaar in the contest who posted a season-high 15 points, while Jedd Rose contributed 10 points. Kraushaar with his team-high 15 points and Levi with the game winner and eight points earned co-Community National Bank "Players to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Both Mitchell Olson and Whalen Kokoruda each added nine points in the win.

With the win Frankfort advances to the 1A-DI Onaga Sub-State Semifinals to take on Doniphan West on Thursday night, while Onaga will take on Centralia in the other Semifinal. (Both games will be on 92.1 KMZA & MSCSports.net)
