Valley Falls and Jefferson County North Girls to Meet for Sub-State Championship
By Jonny Kane

Semifinal #1: #1 Valley Falls vs. #4 Troy

For a half, the Troy girls hung tough with undefeated Valley Falls trailing by just one at halftime by keeping the tempo slow, and to a half-court game.

But then the Lady Dragons blew things open in the third quarter, flying by the Lady Trojans 44-22 in the semfinals of the Class 2A Horton Sub-State.

The Lady Dragons started strong with a quick 5-0 run to begin the ballgame, but two big 3-pointers by Troy senior Madi Marriott at the end of the first quarter and early in the second kept the game close in the first half.

The Lady Dragons went on a quick 8-3 run out of the break and pushed the lead to 15 after scoring 19 third quarter points to take control the rest of the contest.

Valley Falls (22-0) advanced to the sub-state championship game Saturday evening at 6:00. Troy ended its season with an 11-11 record.

Valley Falls: Ali Brown – 12, Jenna Kramer – 8, Callie Watson – 6, Sydney Gish – 6, Reagan Kirkwood – 6, Rachel Frakes – 4, Allison Kearney – 2.

Troy: Madi Marriott – 13, Blair Weishaar – 5, Lexi Norris – 4.

Semifinal #2: #2 Horton vs. #3 Jefferson County North

Heading into the second semifinal, the JCN and Horton girls had already met twice in the regular season splitting matchups in two completely different ballgames.

Thursday night the Lady Chargers stuck to their game plan from their Feb. 5 win and earned a spot in the Class 2A sub-state championship game with a 33-22 victory.

The JCN defense was the story of the entire first half holding Horton to just 8 total points in the half, while JCN sophomore Ravyn Jobbins dropped 12 first half points to give the Lady Chargers a 20-8 lead at the break.

Horton tried to battle back in the third quarter trimming the deficit to eight several times, but JCN hung tough and kept the Lady Chargers in blue at arm’s length the rest of the way.

JCN (12-10) will battle Valley Falls for the sub-state championship Saturday night in Horton at 6:00. Horton finished up its season with a 12-10 record.

JCN: Ravyn Jobbins – 13, Annabelle Vaught – 9, Carley Elias – 6, Jentry Seichepine – 3, Julie Schrick – 2.

Horton: Madison Blackburn – 8, Daspin Bruning – 6, Callie Hoobler – 4, Abby Ross – 2, Zoe Bone – 2.
