Strong Second Half Gives Wetmore Girls Upset First Round Win at State

Don't let the .500 record into the State tournament deceive you the Wetmore lady Cardinals are a dangerous team and they proved that at the Class 1A-Division II State tournament going in as the eight seed and using a strong second half to comeback for the first round upset over Norwich, winning 47-39. 

Things opened well for the Cardinals taking flight to a 5-0 lead early in the contest but Norwich held Wetmore to one-point the rest of the first quarter and closed the quarter on a 13-1 run to lead 13-6. That lead grew for Norwich as the Eagles posted an 11-6 third quarter to lead 24-12 at intermission. Wetmore didn't go away quietly holding Norwich scoreless for most of the third quarter while piling in points and behind a 21-4 third quarter Wetmore led 33-28 after the third quarter. Down the stretch Wetmore held off Norwich and with late free throws secured the 47-39 win. 

Dakota McQueen paced the Cardinals with a season-high 22 points going 10-12 from the free throw line while, Wetmore was 14-21 from the line as a team. McQueen's performance earned her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on the radio. Gerae Haverkamp and Jill Henry chipped in 15 and eight points, respectively for the Cardinals. 

Wetmore's defense held Norwich to 29.1% shooting from the floor in the game and just 22.2% in the second half while hitting 40.5% from the floor for themselves. 

The win pushes Wetmore to 13-12 on the season and in their sixth trip to the State tournament are headed to the Semifinals in Class 1A-DII where they will play Dighton on Friday at 6:30pm in Dodge City at the United Wireless Arena. (game will be broadcasted on 92.1 KMZA - online
