Olberding and Richter Lead Jackson Heights Boys to 2A Title
By Jonny Kane

Throughout the 2015-16 season, the Jackson Heights boys’ basketball team leaned on the play of junior Wyatt Olberding and senior Zane Richter as the two accounted for 63% of the team’s total offense.

Saturday night the two showcased why they are one of the most lethal two-man combinations in the state.

Olberding poured in 27 points, while Richter added 26 to lead the Cobras to their first state championship since 2003 in a 64-55 win over Salina-Sacred Heart.

While the offense was clicking on all cylinders, it was the Jackson Heights defense in the first half that allowed the No. 5 seed of the tournament to jump out to a 14 point lead at halftime.

The Cobras held Sacred Heart to just 20 first half points on 32 percent shooting from the floor, while shooting 46 percent themselves.

Sacred Heart made runs in the second half trimming what was an 18 point deficit down to nine several times, but every time Jackson Heights had an answer to keep the Knights at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Jackson Heights shot 28 free throws in the second half converting on 17, as Richter finished the game 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, while Olberding made 8-of-12, all in the fourth quarter.

The Cobras finished the season at 24-2 overall and champions of the Northeast Kansas League, while claiming their third state title in program history.

Jackson Heights: Wyatt Olberding – 27, Zane Richter – 26, Mason Thomas – 5, Braden Dohl – 5, Mason Hamilton – 1.

Sacred Heart: Quinn Riordan – 13, Lucas Comfort – 11, Jerod Toogood – 10, Statton Brown – 8, Caleb Jordan – 4, Jack Skidmore – 4, Tyler Ritter – 3, Tyler Gormley – 2.
