Mound City Girls Win State Basketball Championship

(KLZA)-- The Mound City Girls Basketball team has won the Missouri Class 1 State Championship.

Saturday night in Columbia the Lady Panthers defeated the Naylor Eagles 57-45 to claim the title. Mound City finishes the season 30-1. 

Mound City led 10-6 after one quarter but senior point guard Kendey Eaton sat nearly half of the first quarter and all of the second period with two fouls.  Naylor was able to tie the game at 15, 17 and 20 but never did get the lead. Freshman Victoria Nauman came off the bench to help with the ball-handling duties and keep the Panthers in the contest.

In the third period Mound City stretched the two point halftime lead to 35-29 and then hit 12 of 16 free throw attempts in the final period to claim the title 57-45.  In the fourth quarter Eaton scored 10 of her 18 points including 6 of 7 free throws.  Sophomore Kameron Freemyer scored 8 of her game high 20 points in the fourth quarter.  Freemyer also grabbed 9 rebounds in the title game and had 4 blocked shots in the first half to set the defensive tone.  

The Panthers had 10 steals and just 7 turnovers in the game while forcing Naylor into 19 turnovers.  The Panthers also out-rebounded the taller Eagles squad 37 – 30, the Panther total included 16 offensive rebounds.  

Mound city got 9 points and 7 rebounds from Tess Phillips, 7 points and 6 rebounds from Emily Wedlock and points from Kenzie Ashford, Paige Quilty and Deanna Clayton in the title game.  

A large crowd was on hand to watch the Panthers win the title at The Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
