Axtell, Frankfort, Valley Heights & Blue Valley Compete at Riley County Track Invite

A quartet of Twin Valley League teams took their talents to the Riley County track Invitational on Friday and performed quite well with several top team performances and 16 event wins between the four schools in the girls and boys competitions. 

The Axtell and Valley Heights girls lead the way in the team standings for the area teams finishing second and third, respectively behind only Wabaunsee who took first. The lady Eagles took second place only six points off of first, while Valley Heights finished third only 11 points out of first. Frankfort girls took eighth and Blue Valley-Randolph finished ninth out of 12 teams. 

In the boys action the best area team showing came at the hands of Frankfort finishing fifth, while Axtell took sixth, Valley Heights seventh and Blue Valley-Randolph ninth out of 11 teams. Council Grove boys took home first place. 

The Axtell Eagles flew home from the Riley County Invitational with several top notch performances including winning eight events on the day. The lady Eagles won two of the three relay competitions with times of 4:18.47 and 11:18.40 they won the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. Mariah Deters leapt to a pair of first place finishes posting leaps of 17'03 and 5'04 to win the long jump andn high jump titles, while Patricia Heiman won the javelin (119'08.50), Kiersten Talbot took first in the 800 meter run (2:35.71) and Bradie Schmitz finished first in the 400 meter dash (59.37) and took second in the 200. For the boys Brice Koch won the 800 meter run behind a time of 2:00.68. 

Both Chelsea Smith and Anna Buessing earned second place finishes for Axtell in the 800 meter run and javelin, respectively, while Burke Deters took second in the boys 3200 meter run. Third place finishes were earned by the Axtell boy’s 4x800 meter relay team, Khristian Scheibe in the boys pole vault and Colton Buessing in the boys javelin. 

Valley Heights had Shelby Vermetten once again registering the best throws on the day to win the girls shot put (38'09) and discus (127'11) crowns, while Kayla Smith won the triple jump (35'08.25) and took third in the long jump. Skyler Sanders also brought home gold for the Mustangs winning the girls pole vault with a vault of 8'00, while grabbing a second place finish in the triple jump and high jump, too. In the boys competition Adrian Pishny raced to first place in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:31.27 and took second in the 1600. 

Second place finishes for Valley Heights were also earned by Hunter Stevenson in the boy’s javelin, by the Mustang boys 4x800 meter relay team and Nicole Weyer in the girls long jump. Anthony Edwards picked up a third place finish in the boys high jump also for Valley Heights. 

A pair of first place performances led Frankfort at the Riley Couty Invitational as Sheldon Parthemer won the boys pole vault (13'00) and Ryan Kraushaar took first in the boys javelin (150'00). Kraushaar also notched a third place finish in the 200 meter dash, while Lance Ross took second in the boys shot put and the Wildcat boys 4x100 meter relay earned a bronze medal. For the lady Wildcats, Marie Wessel posted second and third place finishes in the shot put and discus, respectively and Kaci Vaughn finished third in the javelin. 

Blue Valley was led by Chase Carey who behind a time of 4:44.89 won the boys 1600 meter run, while Michael Wright took second in the boys discus and Trevor Schwerdt placed third in the boys 400 meter dash. Georgia Hatesohl in the girls action placed second and third in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, respectively and Amber Innes finished third in the shot put. 

All four teams now turn their attention to the Twin Valley League meet coming up next Thursday, May 12th to continue their track season.
