Hiawatha, Immaculata & Marysville Qualify Boys Tennis Players for 3-2-1A State Tournament

As the school year is approaching its close the Spring sports seasons are heading to postseason action and boys tennis kicked that off this past weekend with Regionals as competitors looked to qualify for State by earning a Top six finish or better. 

In Class 3-2-1A one area singles competitor and four area doubles teams are headed to State after strong performances at Regionals hosted by Immaculata. Hiawatha, Marysville and Immaculata are all sending competitors to State. 

For the Hiawatha Red Hawks, Joseph Kunkel finished fifth in singles action at Regionals going 3-1 in action on the day and the doubles team or Ryan Shamburg and Kyle Tollefson placed third in doubles at Regionals going 3-1. Kunkel opened Regionals with a 6-0, 6-3 against a competitor from Bishop Seabury moving on to the Quarterfinals. In the Quarterfinals Kunkel suffered his only loss of the day falling to Marysville's, Aaron Bowlin 4-6, 5-7. Joseph responded with a 6-3, 6-3 win over another competitor from Marysville and assured himself a spot at State and then finished the day taking fifth place with a though three set 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win a Neodesha competitor. Kunkel heads into State with a 17-6 record. 

The doubles action saw the tandem of Shamburg and Tollefson win their first two matches 6-3, 6-2 over Neodesha and 6-1, 6-2 over Bishop Seabury getting them to the Semifinals. In the Semifinals the Red Hawk duo took the 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 loss to KC Christian and fell into the third place game. In the third place match Shamburg and Tollefson registered the 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Maranatha. The Red Hawk duo heads to State with an 11-10 record. 

The Regional host Immaculata is sending a pair of doubles teams to State after a Regional title for Hunter Patten and Adam Habib, while it was a fifth place finish for Andrew Jones and Ben Lee. After a bye in the first round Patten and Habib won 6-2, 6-1 in the Quarterfinals against a team from Maranatha and took down Maranatha again in the Semifinals winning 6-2, 6-0. In the Championship contest a team from KC Christian stood in front of the Raider duo and Patten and Habib took the Regional title with a 6-1, 6-1 Championship match win. The team of Jones and Lee opened Regionals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hiawatha, but lost the next match 2-7, 5-7 to KC Christian. In a must win Jones and Lee responded with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Bishop Seabury to earn a spot at State and then went on to take fifth going 3-1 on the day. In the fifth place match Jones and Lee won 6-0, 6-2 over Marysville team of Jake Hill and Maverick Ohlde. The Raider doubles teams head to State with records of 29-8 and 25-8 for Patten/Habib and Jones/Lee, respectively. 

Marysville Bulldogs are sending a doubles team to State as Jake Hill and Maverick Ohlde finished sixth at Regionals going 2-2 in action. Hill and Ohlde won a though opening round 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 10-8 against Neodesha but then lost in the Quarterfinals 4-6, 2-6 to Maranatha. Needing a win to get to State Hill and Ohlde responded with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Maranatha to make the fifth place match were they took the loss to Immaculata and finished fifth. The Bulldog duo heads to State with a 7-6 record this year. 

In Class 4A, Atchison competed at the Desoto Regional and wrapped up their boys tennis season at the Regional action. 

For all the area qualifiers in Class 3-2-1A they finish out their season at State in Wichita at the Riverside Tennis Complex on Friday and Saturday, May 13th and 14th.
