Hiawatha, Immaculata & Marysville Boys Tennis Players Compete at 3-2-1A State

After qualifying for State by finishing in the Top six at Regionals area boy's tennis players from Hiawatha, Immaculata and Marysville took to the court one final time for the season in Wichita to compete in the Class 3-2-1A State tournament.

Leading the way for the Hiawatha Red Hawks was Joseph Kunkel who was the only area qualifier for singles competition at State. The competition opened up with a tough hard fought two set win for Kunkel going to tiebreaker in both sets, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) against a competitor from Wichita Independent. Kunkel in the second round had another tough matchup and it went three sets but the Red Hawk was the losing side falling 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 4-10 to a competitor from Trego Community. In the loser's bracket Kunkel bowed out of the State tournament with a 9-6 loss to competitor from Larned ending Kunkel's season with a 1-2 showing at State. 

In doubles action the Hiawatha duo of Ryan Shamburg and Kyle Tollefson went 0-2 falling 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round to Hesston and bowing out of the State tournament with a 9-4 loss to KC Christian in the loser's bracket. 

Immaculata Raiders had two doubles teams in action on the day at State. The team of Hunter Patten and Adam Habib had an opening round bye, but in their first match at State took a loss 6-1, 6-4 to Wichita Independent. The Raider duo bounced back with a win in their next match but went on to bow of the tournament with a loss in the their next matchup in the loser's bracket going 1-2 at State. The Raider duo of Andrew Jones and Ben Lee had a tough first round matchup making it close but lost 6-7 (4-7), 3-6 to Sterling and then wrapped up their State tournament in the loser's bracket with a 6-9 loss to Chaparral. 

For Marysville the team of Jake Hill and Maverick Ohlde it the court at State and went 0-2 in competition falling 0-6, 1-6 in the first round to Hutchinson and wrapped up State with a loss to Wichita Independent in the loser's bracket.
