Battle of Mustangs Goes to Valley Heights Over Doniphan West

Looking to gallop to win number one of the season Valley Heights hosted Doniphan West in a battle of the Mustangs out of the Twin Valley League. By the end of the game it was a Valley Heights victory 36-6.

The tone of the contest was set early on the first offensive drive of the competition as Valley Heights started on offense and mounted a methodical drive to take control of the game. Doniphan West appeared to had stopped Valley Heights on the first drive in Valley Heights territory with a fourth down and one and Valley Heights lined up and drew Doniphan West off-sides to earn the first down and keep the driving going which ended in a three-yard touchdown run by Hunter Stevenson and with the PAT it was 7-0 Valley Heights with over six and half minutes take off the clock to start the game. 

Doniphan West struggled to move the ball early in the contest and Valley Heights controlled the time of possession and was efficient moving the ball. On the second drive of the game for Valley Heights they found the endzone on a five-yard run from Stevenson with 10:22 left in the second quarter to lead 14-0. Doniphan West pinned Valley Heights deep in their own territory on Valley Heights third drive and can up with a stop giving Doniphan their best field position they managed to get down to the 10-yard line but lost a fumble and Valley Heights answered with their third scoring drive of the game. An 80-yard drive commenced after the Doniphan West turnover and was finished by Logan Woodyard on a 34-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Harrison Blaske. The PAT missed up Valley Heights went up 20-0 with 1:44 left in the first half. Doniphan West looking to find something on offense aired it out on the next drive but the Levi Watts pass was picked off by Jacob Schuh and Valley Heights headed into half up 20-0. 

The second half started strong for Doniphan West as they mounted a drive to start the half by taking a lot of time off the clock but the drive stalled out around the redzone has Jordan Yungeberg notched a fourth down sack for Valley Heights to stop Doniphan West. Doniphan West flipped the time of possession in their favor in the second half but it didn't result in points until 11:25 left in the game as Carson Lackey had an 18-yard touchdown run making it 20-6. 

Valley Heights responded with another long drive and with a fourth and one play on the 42-yard line Woodyard took to the air and found a wide open Jeremy Reed for a touchdown and with the two-point conversion went up 28-6 with just over eight minutes left. Stevenson put the final exclamation point on the game for Valley Heights with a 34-yard touchdown run with 1:12 left and Valley Heights galloped to the win 36-6.

Doniphan West in the loss was held to just 48 total yards in the first half but finished with 202 yards of total offense led by Lackey who had 14 carries for 67 yards with a touchdown and one catch for 20 yards. 

Ball control and efficiency led Valley Heights as Stevenson ran for three touchdowns on 18 carries with 173 yards, while Woodyard finished 5-6 for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Stevenson's strong performance on offense and impact on defense earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA radio. 

The win moves Valley Heights to 1-1 on the season, while Doniphan West fell to 0-2 to start the year. Week three Doniphan West will play host to Hiawatha, while Valley Heights travels to Christ Prep and will play on Saturday, September the 17th.
