Hiawatha Girls Take Second, While Atchison Boys & Girls Each Take Third at Sabetha XC Invite

Several area cross country teams were in action on Thursday against some tough competition at the Sabetha Invitational. 

In the girls action it was Baldwin topping the team standings by 35 points, while Hiawatha took second place only three points ahead of Atchison who finished third. Kaw Valley took fourth place and Wamego placed fifth. Jeff West, Jackson Heights, Holton and Jefferson County North finished out the girls team standings finishing sixth through ninth. 

The boys belonged to Wamego in a big way as they posted a score of 25 points to win by 50 over Baldwin who took second, while Atchison finished in third place. Jackson Heights and Hiawatha rounded out the Top five placing fourth and fifth as teams. Marysville, Kaw Valley, St. Mary's Academy, Wetmore and Royal Valley placed sixth through tenth as teams, while Sabetha Jeff West, Jefferson County North and Pike Valley finished 11th through 14th. 

Nemaha Central, Horton and ACCHS all also competed on the day at the Sabetha Invitational. 

A trio of Top 20 finishers helped the lady Red Hawks of Hiawatha to a second place team performance and those individual finishes included the best time on the day as Elizabeth Kettler notched a time of 19:46 to take first place. Emma Williams and Mary Rosa ran to the other Top 20 finishes placing 14th and 15th. In the boy’s race Gavin Lierz had the best Hiawatha finish placing 12th. 

Atchison led the area teams with the most Top 20 finishes on the day with four in the girl’s race and two in the boys competition. A time of 21:22 of helped Emily Jaloma to a fourth place finish on the day in the girl’s race, while Hailey Macierowski, Adalynn Collins and Teagan Hanson placed 16th, 17th and 19th. In the boy’s action, Matthew Sowers led the Redmen placing eighth behind a time of 18:33, while Chris Filley took 20th. 

The host Sabetha Bluejays had a trio of Top 20 finishers on the day led by a ninth place finish by Keegan Cox who posted a time of 18:42, while Henry Glynn earned a 15th place finish in the boys race. In the girls action Megan Meyer took 13th place for the Bluejays. 

Second place with a time of 20:35 in the girl’s race led Jackson Heights as Faith Little earned that finish, while Dalton Chartier posted a time of 18:42 to take tenth in the boys race. 

Marysville had a pair of Top 20 finishers in the boy’s competition as Jacob Backus and Max Werner finished 16th and 17th, respectively. 

The top area boy’s performance came from Wetmore Cardinal, Aaron Achten who with a time of 18:24 finished seventh. 

Jeff West and Royal Valley each had one Top 20 finisher on the day at the Sabetha Invite. For the Tigers it was Macy Tucker posting a time of 21:46 to take seventh place in the girls race, while Garrett Hicks finished 18th for Royal Valley in the boys race.
