Axtell and Wetmore took flight on Friday night in week six football action and the Eagles ultimately flew to the win 30-16 on homecoming night for the Eagles.

The Wetmore Cardinals started the game strong mounting a drive into the Axtell redzone but stalled out and turned the ball over on downs, but after a strong defensive stand got the ball back with a short field starting in Axtell territory. Wetmore then mounted another drive and punched their ticket to the endzone on a two-yard run by Joel Hutfles and two-point conversion made it 8-0 with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

Second quarter belonged to Axtell as freshman, Quinn Buessing took over at quarterback and stayed there the rest of the game the Eagles offense started to go to the aerial attack more converting big plays and got into the endzone with 8:14 left in the first half and tied the game at 8-8 on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Koch from Buessing. Another short dump pass from Buessing to Michael Swanson turned into a 58-yard play and touchdown in the second quarter with just under four minutes to go in the half and with the two-point conversion Axtell took their first lead at 16-8. Both teams had opportunities in the final two minutes of the first half but each team spoiled those with interceptions as Swanson picked off a Wetmore pass and Alex Potter picked off an Axtell pass just seconds before halftime.

Axtell took advantage of an opportunity in the third quarter to push their lead to two scores as Quinn Buessing notched a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 24-8 with just under seven minutes to go in the third.

The lead stayed that way for a while even with both teams fumbling the ball away in the second half once each but with 8:57 left in the game Wetmore got back within one score as they had pinned Axtell back forcing a punt and a bad snap went all the way back into the endzone and recovered by the Cardinals for a touchdown making it 24-16. But on the ensuing kickoff Swanson busted a big return bring down to the Wetmore six-yard line and three plays later Nate Buessing ran the ball in for the Axtell touchdown to make it 30-16 with 7:44 left in the game. The Cardinals continued to fight but fell short of getting into the endzone again in contest despite coming up with defensive stops and a blocked punt.

The win pushes Axtell to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in District play as Quinn Buessing led the charge with a 14-22 night for 212 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another to earn Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Swanson caught six passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Koch caught seven passes for 75 yards and score.

Wetmore with the loss fell to 0-6 on the year and 0-2 in District play. Hutfles finished the game 7-17 for 77 yards and a rushing touchdown, while Garrett Evans notched 51 yards on 22 carries.

Both teams continue the season and District plays in week seven as Wetmore hosts Blue Valley and Axtell plays host to Wakefield.
