Hiawatha Girls & Boys Sweep Big 7 Cross Country Titles

All nine Big Seven League schools converged in Sabetha on Thursday for the League cross country meet and the competition proved to be strong. 

Leading the charge was the Hiawatha Red Hawks who swept the League teams titles winning the girls and boys crowns, while individually a Red Hawk won the girls race while a Sabetha Bluejay won the boys competition. 

The lady Red Hawks won the League title by 18 points finishing with a score of 35 to take first place, while Perry Lecompton finished second and Jeff West third. Sabetha and Holton finished fourth and fifth as teams. 

In the boys competition the race was a bit tighter for the League title as Hiawatha edged Perry Lecompton by three points to win the League title. Royal Valley boys took third place as a team, while Sabetha and Holton finished fourth and fifth. Jeff West and Nemaha Central placed sixth and seventh as teams. 

The top girl’s time of 19:34 paced the lady Red Hawks to their League title was Elizabeth Kettler raced her way to Big Seven League champ in the girls race. Mary Rosa and Emma Williams notched times of 22:00 and 22:08 to place sixth and seventh, while Madison Gilbert finished 12th, Jada Rosa took 15th and Alysun Shamburg placed 18th. Second and third place finishes for Gavin Lierz and Parker Winters with times of 18:28 and 18:33 led the Hiawatha boys on the day. Dexter Campbell, Tom Nolte and Kade Tollefson all finished in the Top 20 for Hiawatha placing 14th, 17th and 20th, respectively. 

Sabetha Bluejay, Keegan Cox raced to the best time in the boys race to win the Big Seven crown posting a time of 17:55 to take first. His teammate, Henry Glynn earned fourth place behind a time of 18:48, while Garrett Scott finished 16th. Lady Bluejays were led by Megan Meyer who with a time of 21:34 took fourth place in the girls competition, while Mahalie Allen finished 14th. 

The Perry Lecompton Kaws had a pair of second place team finishes at League and were led by a second place finish in the girl’s race as Lexia Jamison with a time of 21:04 took second place. Blaise Ball ran to a tenth place finish with a time of 22:29, while Jolie Hirsch finished 13th and Emily Hamm placed 17th. In the boys competition times of 18:54 and 19:07 led the Kaws as Josh Mitts and Canaan Daniels posted those times to finish sixth and seventh, while Calvin McPherson and Josh LeClair placed 12th and 13th. 

Jeff West Tigers were led by Macy Tucker who with a time of 21:11 took third place in the girl’s race, while Makenzie Tucker posted a time of 21:41 to finish fifth and Taylor Giltner placed 19th. Isaiah Schmidt was the only Tiger boys to register a Top 20 finish at League placing 18th. 

Garrett Hicks and Nue Tinajero raced to times of 19:13 and 19:30 for Royal Valley to place eighth and ninth in the boy’s race. While their teammate Devon Hale earned a 15th place finish. Katie Hanshaw also nabbed a Top 10 showing for Royal Valley finishing eighth behind a time of 22:13, while Chloe Richter placed 11th. 

Holton Wildcats were led by Wyatt Marriott who with a time of 18:53 earned fifth place in the boy’s competition, while Skyler Weir placed 19th. Lady Wildcats were led by Taygen Altenburg who placed 16th at League. 

ACCHS Tigers were led by Victoria Caplinger who with a time of 22:16 placed ninth in the girl’s race and her teammate, Erin Hamilton earned 20th place. 

Nemaha Central Thunder was led by Jordan Peterson at League who placed 11th in the boy’s competition. 

Riverside Cyclones had Matthew Kline highlight their day at League placing 10th with a time of 19:31.
