All that was up for grabs on Thursday night in Valley Falls was a win to finish the season for what would be each team’s second win of the season. But at the end of the night game between Valley Falls and Onaga it proved to be much more as many State records fell or were tied as the Buffaloes won a shootout 114-68. The big record going down was the most combined points in a single game at the 8-Man level in Kansas with 182 points, beating the previous mark of 174 from 2014 game between Otis-Bison and Kinsley.

The game started with a defensive stop by Onaga, something that didn't happen regularly for the rest of the game unless it was on a turnover. Valley Falls went for a fourth down in their own territory and was unsuccessful setting up Onaga with a short field and two-plays the Buffaloes visited the endzone for the first time on the night on a 27-yard Logan Marten touchdown pass to Brandon Merriman and with two-point conversion it was 8-0. Dragons looked like they were going to be able to answer but their drive stalled out and they turned it over on downs again and after taking back over Onaga busted a 61-yard touchdown run by Marten and another two-point conversion lead 16-0 with 7:13 left in first quarter.

Valley Falls broke through for their first score with just under five minutes left in the first quarter as Tyler Lockhart hit Chris Yates for a 20-yard strike going for six, making it 16-6 after a failed two-point conversion. Dragons on the ensuing kickoff used an onside kick and recovered it, then got inside the ten on the drive only to turn the ball over on downs again. The next play Marten was off to the races again gliding down the field for a 72-yard touchdown run for Onaga and with another two-point conversion it was 24-6 with 2:28 left in the first quarter. The lead grew for Onaga to 32-6 with 25 seconds left in the first as the Buffaloes added another eight points as Marten hit Tyler Herman for a 20-yard score the first of eight touchdown connections with him alone on the night.

In the second quarter Valley Falls recovered another onside kick (second of three recovered in game) and forced an Onaga fumble, but only managed two scores on a Jachin Drinkard four-yard touchdown catch and 42-yard touchdown catch for Jason Myers both coming from Lockhart. On the flip side Onaga who had a -20 turnover margin entering the game got six interceptions on defense three in each half and the three in the first half helped them three touchdowns in the second quarter. Marten hit Herman for 29 and 21-yard touchdown passes and Brendan Melvin added a one-yard touchdown run, taking using to halftime with a 54-22 Onaga lead.

Valley Falls made things interesting early in the second half forcing Onaga into a pair of fumbles on their first two drives of the second half and turned both into touchdowns. Lockhart hit Yates for four and 20-yard touchdown passes and with one of two on two-point conversions it was 54-36 with 6:45 left in the third quarter. Onaga fixed their struggles and found the endzone for the first time in the second half on a 17-yard Marten touchdown pass to Herman and with two-point conversion led 62-36 with 4:12 left in third quarter. Each team found the endzone once more before the end of the third as Carter Allen had a one-yard touchdown run for Valley Falls and Marten hit Herman for a 47-yard touchdown.

The fourth quarter featured 70 points between the two teams as it scoring fest continued. Valley Falls got 65 and 26-yard touchdown runs by Allen and a 57-yard touchdown scamper by Lucas Welborn, while a 27-yard touchdown pass from Lockhart to Drinkard with 2:32 left in the game tied the State record for combined points in a game. Onaga in the fourth finished the game with Marten running for touchdowns of 39, 39 and 37-yards, while tossing 36, 16 and 47-yard touchdown passes to Herman with Logan's second 39-yard touchdown run of the fourth breaking the scoring record and ending the game at 114-68 with 1:31 left in the contest.

The win finishes the season 2-7 for Onaga in their initial 8-Man football campaign and Marten paced the team with Marten pacing the way accounting for 650+ yards of offense. Marten ran for 322 yards on 21 carries with five touchdowns and was 15-20 for 330 yards with nine touchdowns; his nine touchdowns tie the State record for a single game. Tyler Herman caught eight of the nine touchdowns on 12 receptions for 288 yards, breaking the record for most touchdown receptions in a single game. Buffalos did have three fumbles in the game and allowed Valley Falls to recover three onside kicks.

Valley Falls with the loss finished the season 1-8 and had Lockhart throw over 70 times, unofficially going 37-79 for 465 yards with six touchdowns, while Yates caught 14 passes for 213 yards with three touchdowns. Cole Brosa snagged 13 passes for 134 yards in the loss and Allen ran for 257 yards on 30 carries with three touchdowns. Dragons however struggled converting on fourth down all night and three six interceptions.

Several other State records were potentially broken in the game including offensive plays run as Valley Falls ran about 119 plays with the current record being 95 by Tipton in 1986.
