Hiawatha Girls & Frankfort Boys Take Second, Pleasant Ridge Boys Third & Nine Top 20 Individuals Lead Area Runners at State Cross Country

2016 State Cross Country Meet Results - 4A Girls, 3A Girls, 3A Boys, 2A Girls, 2A Boys, 1A Girls and 1A Boys

The start gun fired one final time on Saturday as runners from across the State competed at the State cross country competitions in all classifications. Three area teams registered Top three finishes, while nine area runners individually had Top 20 finishes. 

Class 3A

The performances in Class 3A led the way for Northeast Kansas on Saturday in cross country action as the Hiawatha lady Red Hawks for the second straight took second as a team at State, while the Pleasant Ridge boys earned a third place finish after taking fifth the previous year. 

Hiawatha lady Red Hawks led by a second place finish at State by Elizabeth Kettler finished only eight points out of a State Championship finishing behind Hugoton. Kettler raced to a time of 19:23.80 to earn the silver medal at State leading Hiawatha. While, Emma Williams took 25th, Mary Rosa 30th, Aly Shamburg 47th, Jada Rosa 51st, Madison Gilbert 56th and Sofie Yde 76th place for Hiawatha at State out of 102 runners. In the boys State competition Gavin Lierz ran for Hiawatha and finished 42nd. 

The Pleasant Ridge boys back at State for the second straight year as a team improved their team finish by two spots finishing third place at State led by the time of 17:21.30 by Luke Oatney who earned eighth place out of 104 runners, while Clayton Price registered a time of 17:46.20 to place 14th. Dayton Flack raced to a 47th place for the Rams, while Garrett Silvers placed 50th, Reid Herken 85th, Derek Zule 95th and Glenn Smith 98th. 

The lady Kaws of Perry Lecompton finished sixth at 3A State out of 12 teams led by Lexia Jamison who with a time of 20:43.70 finished fifth place. Also in action for the Perry Lecompton girls were Blaise Ball who placed 49th; Jolie Hirsch 60th; Sara Haggard 69th; Mary Kathryn Dwyer 74th, Emily Hamm 77th and Dorothy Haggard 95th.

Sabetha Bluejays had a pair of runners compete at State as Megan Meyer placed 36th in the girls race and Henry Glynn finished 49th in the boys competition. 

Four other area schools had one runner in the 3A boys State competition as Marysville had Jacob Backus place 25th, Maur Hill's Ayden Black took 28th place, Garrett Hicks of Royal Valley placed 58th and Braeden Pfau of Oskaloosa posted a 62nd place finish. 

Class 1A

The top performances at State in Wamego in Class 1A came from Axtell individual and the Frankfort boys as a team. 

The Wildcat boys placed third out of nine teams finishing only 14 points out of first place. Brandon Anderson led Frankfort at the State race finishing 22nd, while Brodric Shirley was right behind time in 23rd. Colton Partemer took 29th place, Garrett Dalinghaus notched a 49th place finish, Brenden Levi ran to a 76th place finish and Cody Evans was right behind in 77th. Jaron Thomas also competed for the Wildcats finishing 89th. 

Leading the way for the Axtell Eagle boys was Burke Deters who with a time of 18:08.10 placed 11th in the boy’s race on the day out of 91 runners. Oliver Schmitz raced to 27th place for the Eagles, Blake Porting finished in 51st and Simon Schimtz placed 67th. Olivia Kuckelman ran in the girl’s race and earned 19th place out of 80 runners. 

Centralia lady Panthers were the only area 1A girls team to qualify for State and they finished ninth place as a team led by Tamra Jones who finished 28th, as Sadie Jones took 37th and Kaitlyn Becker 59th Madison Boeckman, Shaley Hipp and Courtney Huerter all also ran for Centralia posting finishes of 67th, 69th and 78th. Dylan Boeckman ran in the boy’s competition and finished just outside of the Top 20 placing 21st. 

Wemtore Cardinal, Aaron Achten with a time of 18:23.90 third 13th place overall on the day in Wamego for the 1A State cross country meet.  

Class 2A

A fifth place performance by Adrian Pishny of Valley Heights led the area runners in Class 2A as he posted a time of 17:31.30 to take fifth place, his teammate, Alex Hardin posted a finish of 23rd place out of 99 runners. 

The Jackson Heights boys were the only area 2A team to qualify for State and the Cobras finished seventh out of 12 teams at State. Dalton Chartier led Jackson Heights racing to a 22nd place finish, while Mark Mavrovich took 43rd, Lane Thomas 45th, Xavier Fritz 52nd and Drew Holliday 54th. Ethan Fund also ran for the Cobras finished 62nd, along with a 70th place for Andrew Pino.

The top 2A area girl’s performance came from Ceara Funk of McLouth who with a time of 22:44.73 placed 18th out of 95 runners. 

Sara Domann of Jefferson County North also ran on the day in the girl’s race posting a 73rd place finish. 

Class 4A

Only two area runners managed to qualify in Class 4A for the State cross country meet and they posted finishes of 48th and 70th. Macy Tucker of Jeff West worked her way to 48th place out of 100 runners, while Hailey Macierowski placed 70th for Atchison at Wamego for the 4A cross country State competition.
