Washington County Tigers for the second straight year picked up a playoff victory this year in Class 2-1A as they moved back down from Class 3A the previous two years. The Tigers are looking to string another playoff win together and earn a spot in the Sub-State round of the 2-1A playoffs but a road trip to Pittsburg looms to take on St. Mary’s Colgan.

The Tigers will have a big task on their hands facing off with Colgan a school known for its tradition and winning programs and the Panthers of Colgan like Washington County are making the transition back down to Class 2-1A this year after years in Class 3A. The Panthers enter the contest winning their last six games and their three losses have come to a pair of 4A-DII playoff teams in Columbus and unbeaten Frontenac, along with a loss to a 3A playoff team in Galena. Colgan is scoring 35 points per game this year and giving up 15.6 points per game on the year.

Colgan earned a berth into the Sectional round with a 42-21 victory in the first round of the playoffs against Olpe.

Washington County has battled depth and injuries all year but weathered the storm with some crucial injuries but sit at 8-2 with losses to only #1 3A school in Hoisington and #1 2-1A school in Troy. The Tigers have been led a strong senior class and Hunter Kier has been a big part of the despite missing some games still rushing for 1,148 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. Jae Eaton has been a strong compliment to Kier in the backfield also all year. Tigers are averaging 26.4 points per game this year and giving up 18.3 points per game.

The Tigers snagged their first 2-1A playoff win since 2006 last week with an 18-0 victory over Jefferson County North holding the Chargers to 80 total yards in the game and Eaton ran for 145 yards on 21 carries with Kier adding 90 yards and two touchdowns.

The winner moves on to the 2-1A Sub-State round of the playoffs and will earn a date with the winner of the Lyndon at Troy contest.
