Holton Sweeps Royal Valley on Hardwood

GIRLS = Holton 64, Royal Valley 41

In the Big 7 Jackson County girls battle, Holton jumped to a 7-1 lead and foced 10 turnovers in the opening quarter to stake a 21-10 advantage.  Shay Tanking came out on file and really never cooled off after scoring 16 of her career high 32 points in the frist period.  The Lady Panthers trailed 33-22 at halftime after a pair of baskets by Mary Broxterman, then got another Broxterman basket and a trey from Lexi Baker to make it a 33-27 game early in the second half.  Yet, the Wildcats responded with a 10-2 run and pulled away for the road win to improve to 2-0 on the season. 

Behind Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On," Tanking with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals was seniors Ashlyn Weilert with 11 points and Courtney Boswell with 7.  Royal Valley got 11 each from Lexi Baker and Broxterman, but finished with 32 turnovers on the night in falling to 0-2. 

BOYS = Holton 63, Royal Valley 57

The boys game started fast for both teams ending with a tie at 17 after one quarter.  Holton had a pair of five-point advantages, before both teams went cold in the second quarter and the Cats only led 22-21 at halftime.  Holton used an 18-9 third quarter to increase the lead to double digits and then hit 17 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.  Bryson Patch scored 17 points while Mason Chanay came off the bench and added 15 to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha.  Aaron Bain also scored double figures with 10 points while Mason Strader scored 8, including 6-6 at the foul-line in the final 90 seconds.  AJ Haussler also went 5-6 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter when he scored all seven of his points as the Wildcats evened their record at 1-1 and made 22 of 34 foul shots for the game. 

Royal Valley, now 1-1, got 17 points from Leondre Hale, but none in the critical third quarter, while Ian Lee hit a couple treys and added 11 of his 14 points in the final frame.  Masen Spoonhunter chipped in 13 and Lucas Broxterman had 10 for Royal Valley who scored 27 points in the fourth quarter and made five triples, but never got any closer than a 60-57 defecit with 19 seconds remaining.
