Doniphan West Girls & Boys Gallop Into Break With Wins Topping Wetmore

Looking to head into the holiday break with some momentum for the basketball season the Wetmore Cardinals traveled to Highland for a Twin Valley League showdown with the Doniphan West Mustangs. At the end of the night the Mustangs are galloping into the holiday break with wins as the Doniphan West girls beat Wetmore 59-49 and the Mustang boys claimed a 65-34 victory over the Cardinals. 

The night started off with a tight ballgame in the girl’s matchup as former Wetmore head coach, Perry Smith now at Doniphan West as the Mustangs coach took on his former team. The Mustangs got out to a 6-2 start but Wetmore pushed back and led 9-7 but at the end of the first quarter Doniphan West led 10-9 and carried a one-point lead into halftime up 18-17. The Cardinals fell down 14-9 in the second but took a 15-14 lead before trailing at the half by that one-point margin. The third quarter belonged to Doniphan West as they pushed their lead to double figures and posted a 21-9 frame to lead 39-26 after three quarters. Wetmore drew within seven points in the fourth quarter but Doniphan West finished out the game to secure the win. 

Both teams finished the free throw line frequently in the contest as Doniphan West in the win was 22-41 shooting 33 attempts in the second half, while Wetmore notched a 20-31 night at the line with 20 attempts in the second half. 

The win pushed Doniphan West to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in TVL play as they head into the holiday break. Makinley Smith paced the Mustangs with 17 points going 8-12 from the line and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. While, Carlie Taylor chipped in 13 points and Mia Scott contributed 10 points. 

Wetmore with the loss heads into the break 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the TVL and were led by Jill Henry again this season as she scored 18 points and was 12-14 from the line. Dakota McQueen netted 11 points also for the Cardinals. 

A quick start in the boys game by the home team Doniphan West allowed them to gallop out to a 21-6 lead after the first quarter and posted a 20-9 second quarter to lead 41-15 by intermission against Wetmore. The Cardinals struggled to score on the night netting only three field goals in the first half, while Trevor Taylor paced the way for Doniphan West early with 15 of his 19 points in the first half all coming inside the paint. The halftime lead for Doniphan West proved to be to much for Wetmore to come from behind from and the Mustangs went on to grab the 65-34. 

Trio of Mustangs led Doniphan West with double figures as Levi Watts posted 24 points scoring 14 in the second half to lead the team, while Trevor Taylor notched 19 points and Devin Taylor scored 11. The duo of Watts and Trevor Taylor earned co-Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA helping Doniphan West to 3-2 on the year and 3-1 in the TVL. 

Wetmore Cardinals with the loss fell to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in the TVL. Kyle Bloom led the Cardinals in the loss with nine points, while Joel Hutfles tallied seven points. 

Both teams head into the holiday break and get back to the action on the court again on Tuesday, January 3rd as Wetmore will host Cornerstone and Doniphan West will travel to Onaga.
