Cornerstone vs. Pleasant Ridge

Backed by a strong fourth quarter, the Pleasant Ridge girls’ basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the JCN Invitational with a 54-44 win over Cornerstone Tuesday night.

The Rams got off to a great start with sophomore Lindsey Heim and junior Grace Wagner combining to score 8 points in the first quarter. Pleasant Ridge led by as many as 12 points in the first, and took a 14-7 lead into the second.

Cornerstone, though, used free throw shooting to get back in the game, as sophomore point guard Allison Holloway went a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe in the second quarter to trim the deficit to just one at halftime, 28-27.

The Saints took their first lead out of halftime with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter, but Pleasant Ridge battled back and took another one-point lead into the final stanza.

In the fourth the Rams made a concerted effort to get the ball down low to sophomore Julie Miller, and she delivered with 6 straight points to start the quarter while Heim went 3-for-4 from the line to ice the game down the stretch.

Pleasant Ridge: Lindsey Heim – 17, Julie Miller – 10, Kaija Nutsch – 9, Mallory Wagner – 8, Grace Wagner – 4, Ashley Nooner – 3, Allison Herbig – 3.

Jefferson County North vs. ACCHS

On Monday, the Jefferson County North girls’ basketball team was named the No. 5-ranked team in Class 2A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

The Chargers looked the part Tuesday night, holding the ACCHS Tigers scoreless until mid-way through the second quarter in a 47-22 win in Winchester.

JCN made a concerted effort to get the ball inside early on, with juniors Annabelle Vaught and Ravyn Jobbins combining to score 12 points in the first quarter which keyed a 19-0 run to begin the game stretching into the second quarter.

The Tigers first bucket came with 5:40 remaining in the first half on a layup from Georgia Appel, sparking an 8-2 ACCHS run capped off by a Jaycee Ernzen 3-pointer.

But, the Chargers answered right back with a run of their own to take a 30-9 lead into halftime.

From there the Tigers hung right with JCN for the remainder of the game only being outscored by 4 in the second half, but the damage was already too much for ACCHS to overcome.
